Guest guest
Hi I have had fibro for many years now and over this time my hair has got thinner and thinner I am getting really worried now as nothing I do seems to work. Has anyone out there got any suggestions as to what might be causing it and if there is anything I can take or do to reverse this process? God bless, Ruthy
Guest guest
Ruthy, as far as I know thinning hair is a symptom of fm as well as brittle nails, I know as I have always suffered with both. I had to stop painting my nails as that made it worse. i still color my hair though which I am sure doesnt help. Now there are 2 things I know of that can help. I used to use a shampoo and conditioner Nutrox is the generic brand. I forget the name brand but it is at least 25.00 a bottle. the nutrox is more affordable about 12.00 a bottle. it lasts a long time. I did stop using it and switched to Redken products. my thinning hair problem did not worsen when I stopped the nutrox and i was curious about that. It seems that one of my supplements is good for thinning hair and I did not know that. It is MSM with glucosomine. Hope this helps a > > Hi I have had fibro for many years now and over this time my hair has > got thinner and thinner I am getting really worried now as nothing I do > seems to work. Guest guest
I found an article in a chiropractic journal suggesting that fibro and cfs are related to difficulties converting the thyroid hormone T4 to the active form of T3. If your thyroid is low or you're not converting (or taking up) the hormone, it will cause a lot of symptoms very similar to hypothyroidism, one of which is thinning hair (another of which is fibromyalgia pain). To find out if this is part of your problem, you'd need a full thyroid panel that includes both T4 and T3 levels. I have mine done twice a year, which is how the doctor discovered I was having conversion problems. I started taking straight T3 instead of something like Armour and the fibro pain reduced significantly. One of the dental hygienists I like also has the same problem and gets similar relief. The side benefit is maintaining a thick mane of hair. The other thing that can cause hair loss is reduction in estradiol, which occurs when you're perimenopausal. There are also vitamin deficiencies that can cause hair loss. A full work up with a good doctor can discover what's causing the problem. And remember, if that's one of the symptoms, obviously whatever the cause is may be affecting you in a lot of other ways. The hair loss may just be the alarm to trigger you to find its source (and possibly improve overall health in the process).
