The fish oil is purified to a standard and cholesterol,eg, is removed. I never thought I'd be able to see any solids. It's certainly not the % of 14:0 and 16:0 (25%), so maybe they don't get it all.

BTW, "salmon oil" is not as high as cod liver oil. Maybe cod has a warm liver.

Regards.

Solids in cold fish oil at 40 degrees may be perfectly natural. Codliver oil, for example, has 8% myristic acid (C14:0) and 17% palmiticacid (C16:0). Cow butterfat, by contrast, has 11%, and 27% of thesetwo saturated fatty acids, respectively. We know that butter is solid in the refrigerator, so why not thesaturated portion of the fish oil?Tony>>>From: "jwwright" <jwwright@e...>Date: Sat Nov 27, 2004 9:59 amSubject: funny thing about fish oilI keep my large canister of FO in the frig at 40 deg. This morning Isee in the caps, something that looks like solidified grease. Something you'd see if you put oil you fried meat in into the frig. Not much maybe 5%. Realizing those fish are supposed to swim in waterlike 40 deg, it surprises me anything would solidify.Someone's spiking the FO with 5% lard (ha)?>>>

You're right, Tony, I was looking at the table for salmon by mistake.

But the fish oil is supposed to be purified and they can apparently change the ratio of EPA to DHA and remove cholesterol. The link looks like good salmon oil, a little less EPA. These are 180 EPA 120 DHA - not the best perhaps.

I got a bad bottle of salmon oil - maybe too old or got to hot in shipment. Maybe winter is a good time to order thru the mail.

I was just surprised that purified fish oil can have "solid" fatty acids since they swim in 40 deg water. I mean, that's what everyone used to say right? They have "good" oil because they have to be flexible.

I'm not sure about any of this EPA/DHA stuff anyway, but 1 cap/day doesnt cause "bruises", so far, and it doesnt raise BP. Since I avoid the 18:3 (and I notice the salmon oil has a little of that too), I've just been taking the FO.

But it's just an experiment for now, anyway. Also I seem to get enough 18:2 (the essential fatty acid) to keep away the dusty elbows, without trying to supplement.

Now if you could tell me how to grow hair? (ha).

Regards.

JW,I found a link to "Salmon Oil" fatty acid profile:http://www.brownwoodacres.com/express2.htmAccording to the detailed analysis, salmon oil has:4.9% myristic C14:0, 18.5% palmitic C16:0, and 2.4% stearic C18:0 (orabout 26% saturated fatty acids). This is not too far off thepercentages for cod liver oil. The saturated fatty acids are probablyresponsible for the clouding or solids that you see in therefrigerated capsules.Tony Zamora>>>From: "jwwright" <jwwright@e...>Date: Sat Nov 27, 2004 6:02 pmSubject: Re: [ ] Re: funny thing about fish oilThe fish oil is purified to a standard and cholesterol,eg, is removed.I never thought I'd be able to see any solids.
