Exercise may be the single most important factor for preventing and reversing insulin resistance. thank you. To flesh that out, I looked up this: J Appl Physiol. 2004 Jan;96(1):101-6. Epub 2003 Sep 12. Effect of the volume and intensity of exercise training on insulin sensitivity. PMID: 12972442 all groups benefited, but "the relative increment in the low-volume/moderate-intensity and high-volume/high-intensity groups... were greater than in the low-volume/high-intensity group" by roughly double. There was no "low volume/low intensity" group. So carrying cement bags seems right on track as great exercise. OTOH, not all subjects benefit, at least not these hemodialysis patients. Maybe the intensity or duration were not great enough. J Am Soc Nephrol. 2004 Oct;15(10):2713-8. Impact of an exercise program on arterial stiffness and insulin resistance in hemodialysis patients. "These findings suggest that 3 mo of aerobic exercise training improves arterial stiffness, an independent risk factor for cardiovascular mortality in patients who are on hemodialysis, and has no impact on insulin resistance." (The benefit to arteries dissipates within 1 month.) -- Ken
