Christmas Tips

Concentrate on what you can do during the season and let go of thoughts about what you cannot do or think you should do.

Be very clear, both with yourself and with others, about what you can/cannot do. Be organised with your preparations - the last newsletter was packed with information about sensible shopping, using on-line facilities and delivery services etc. It's not too late, so you could take another look at it now:

Pace your activities each day over the holidays so that you don't overdo things.

Keep moving! We tend to do less over the holiday, so it's a good idea to do some gentle stretching exercises each day to reduce pain and to prevent you from stiffening up. And, if you can, get out for some short walks. The winter air can be very refreshing.

Stop now and then and have a "breathing break". Come into the present and concentrate on deep, slow breathing for a calming effect.

Relax! Much pain is caused by muscle tension so take time out for relaxation or to listen to peaceful music. Make an unbreakable appointment with yourself and set aside a definite time each day for this session.

Stay calm! Christmas can be a stressful time so try not to get drawn in to disagreements. If you feel your emotions rising, say "STOP!" to yourself. Take a few slow, deep breaths to slow your system down.

Medication - if you're taking medication, remember that some drugs react badly with alcohol, so if you're not sure, check before you indulge!

Pain - we hope it doesn't happen, but if you get a flare up of pain, use an ice pack (covered) - or choose some comforting heat if you prefer – and take it easy!
