Guest guest
I recall reading years ago that Pres Bush II was a sub-20 Min 5K runner, while not world class it is quite respectable and clearly a notch above Pres Clinton's jogging between burger joints. His fitness has surely suffered due to the demands of office and he admitted to eating a few too many donuts during his re-election campaign. Not quite as bad as what some candidates get fed during elections in the former soviet union. Guest guest
Despite your smiley face what you say is indeed funny since I've run in 5 & 10Ks for well over 20 years, prior to getting my diet under control, at weights ranging as high as perhaps 210-215#. FWIW I was rarely the heaviest runner in those races. I concede running at 150# is quite a bit easier, and these days I beat some people who used to beat me in local races, but it's probably as much due to my consistency in training and their loss of condition than my weight. I am not as fast now as I was around the time I ran my one (and only) marathon, some 20# heavier than I am now. Mileage has a lot to do with it. Guest guest
Greeting. good that you run much healthy. Heavier weight not good for running, LOOK: No man six feet tall and weighing 176lbs (79.8kg) will ever win the London Marathon Matching the figures to reality How do these figures compare to past record holders? Here is a list of some of them: Emile Zatopek - 5'81/2' (1.740m)/154lbs (69.8kg): same as the average man Herb Elliott - 5'101/2' (1.791m)/147lbs (66.6kg): 11 per cent below average Kip Keino - 5'9' (1.753m)/146lbs (66.2kg): 9 per cent below average Seb Coe - 5'10' (1.778m)/120lbs (54.4kg): over 20 per cent below average Steve Cram - 6'11/2' (1.867m)/153lbs (69kg): 15 per cent below average Linford Christie - 6'21/2' (1.89m)/170lbs (77kg): 10 per cent below average Sly - 5'51/2' (1.66m)/113lbs (51kg): 11 per cent below average Murray - 5'7' (1.70m)/111lbs (50kg): 18 per cent below average Sally Gunnell - 5'6' (1.67m)/124lbs (56kg): 5 per cent below average Ingrid Kristiansen - 5'61/2' (1.68m)/128lbs (58kg): 4 per cent below average Tatyana Kazankina - 5'31/2' (1.61m)/110lbs (49kg): 6 per cent below average Greta Waitz - 5'61/2' (1.689m)/110lbs (49kg): 17 per cent below average Good health to you and all that here this board! Guest guest
Public figures are always trying to impress us with their physical prowess to reassure us that we have " strong " leaders. On 16 July 1966, chairman Mao swam in the Yangtze River to show that he was physically fit and able to lead China during the Cultural Revolution. With regard to Bush, yes he was a runner, but years of running three miles in 21 minutes ruined his knees from the high impact exercise. In 1997, he had arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage damage to his left knee and in 2003, at age 57, he had " post-traumatic degenerative changes " of his right knee and had to switch to lower impact exercises. At 6 feet and 194 lb, his BMI is 26.4 -- about 10.8 lb overweight. However, if the 14.5% figure for body fat is true, the extra 10.8 lb is pure muscle! Guest guest
Hi: Yes, most serious long distance runners are thin. It certainly seems logical that it should help. But is anyone here old enough to remember Chattaway? He held the world record for either the 5,000 metres or the 10,000 metres (or the 3 or 5 miles?), I forget which, back in the late 1950s or early 1960s. At the time it never occurred to me, but I now realize he must have been one of the greatest runners of all time, as he was far from thin. One wonders what times he might have achieved if he had lost twenty pounds. (He was one of the participants in the race where the four-minute mile 'barrier' was broken for the first time). At age 73 he is still running and put in a time of 1:40:00 recently in a race won by a kenyan in a time of about 59 minutes. Guest guest
Hi folks: This is the source of the GWB data: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,141235,00.html Certainly the 194 pounds and 14.5 BF% do look surprising contrasting. Hi Tony. Funny you should mention about W's knees, as I noticed on the news earlier today a limp that I hadn't noticed before; he was walking toward the stair of an aircraft (Airforce 1, I suppose) with his back to the camera. He is definitely somewhat lame (no sarcasm intended). Al
Guest guest
Rodney, It is worse than I thought. Read carefully the link that you provided. It says: " At nearly 6 feet tall, Bush's weight increased to almost 200 pounds from 194 pounds 17 months ago. His body fat percentage increased to 18.25 percent from 14.5 percent. Bush, a devoted exerciser who prides himself on his discipline, seemed to take the gain hard. " What you quoted was the LAST YEAR'S data. The Washington post says Bush is 5'11.75 " tall, 199.6 pounds and 18.25 percent body fat. This makes Bush's BMI 27.3, which means that he is 17.6 pounds overweight.
