Guest guest
Francesca, I think that you are right in mentioning that CRON alone may not sufficient to provide a feeling of well-being. Exercise also plays a role by improving coordination, circulation, pulmonary function, and increase of muscle mass. Below is an abstract about the effects of exercise. Tony ====== Sports Med. 1984 Mar-Apr;1(2):154-71. Endorphins and exercise. Harber VJ, Sutton JR. The endogenous opioids seem likely to be assigned a significant role in the integrated hormonal and metabolic response to exercise. This article reviews the present evidence on exercise and the endogenous opioids, and examines their involvement in a number of widely disparate physiological processes. In considering the role of individual opioid peptides, it is important to remember that many of the tools and techniques now used are still relatively crude. Most studies have demonstrated that serum concentrations of endogenous opioids, in particular beta-endorphin and beta-lipotrophin, increase in response to both acute exercise and training programmes. Elevated serum beta-endorphin concentrations induced by exercise have been linked to several psychological and physiological changes, including mood state changes and 'exercise-induced euphoria', altered pain perception, menstrual disturbances in female athletes, and the stress responses of numerous hormones (growth hormone, ACTH, prolactin, catecholamines and cortisol). Many reports have described a role for the endorphin response as seen during exercise and have used the opioid receptor antagonist, naloxone, to investigate and verify the degree of involvement of the opioids. However, whether the observed increases in peripheral endorphin concentrations are sufficient to cause immediate mood changes, create menstrual cycle dysfunction or alter pain perception is still not resolved. A relatively new implication for the endorphins and associated changes with exercise is in ventilatory regulation. A number of studies have suggested that endogenous opioids depress ventilation and may, therefore, play a role in ventilatory regulation by carbon dioxide, hypoxia and exercise. It may also be possible that during exercise, the perception of fatigue is modulated by an increase of endogenous opioids. It is now going on 5 months since I started the yoga practise I've discussed before because of poor sleep (VERY poor sleep). As I've related, my sleep is greatly improved. For the past few days, I now seem to be getting another benefit that had heretofore eluded me from CRON alone ---- a feeling of well being. Again, as with sleep I'm almost afraid to report it for fear of " jinxing " it (you could say I'm superstitious). To explain: I have been one of those people for whom CRON alone has never resulted in a change into a feeling of well being (even though promised by Walford in his book). Although I'm not depressed, neither am I diffused with a bit of a " high " that Walford talks about - something I always wished for. All along, I pretty much felt the same as before I started CRON afa mood. However the other benes I've gotten from CRON were certainly good enough : for example, I very rarely get sick anymore. No colds, flus, stomach viruses etc. Now after 4 1/2 months or so of yoga, are other benefits I've heard about kicking in???? I've posted in the past an anecdote about a woman who was able to throw away her depression meds after 9 months on yoga. I wasn't depressed of course but I always yearned for that " high " of well being. Can it be??
Guest guest
First congrats to Fran for adopting a successful strategy. Agreed CRON is not some magical solution for all the ills of mankind despite the appearance that it promises so much. Health improved via proper nutrition and energy management is only a piece of the puzzle. While comprehensive definitions of what is required to enjoy satisfaction or inner peace has been pursued by philosophers for centuries, it is nice that we can via cron reduce health issues below the noise level so we can re-focus our energy on higher pursuits. Live long and well... JR -----Original Message----- From: citpeks [mailto:citpeks@...] Sent: Saturday, December 11, 2004 10:50 AM Subject: [ ] Re: yoga for inner peace?????
