This is the brand name of gabapentin, an antiseizure medication that has been shown to be helpful in CFS. In particular it reduces both everyday and migraine headaches (I have not had to use a painkiller since going on 100mg 3X/day). I also just saw a small study where it reduced muscle cramping that interferes with sleep. However, Neurontin is affecting a different system than Xanax, a hypnotic (pain reducer). So depending on your symptoms, and on your body, Neurontin may or may not provide the same relief. Also it will not prevent withdrawl symptoms when you go off the Xanax. If you want to try it, I would suggest starting at 100mg 2 or even 1/day; work up slowly (add another 100mg/day every week or so). Go up to just what you need for pain relief. Guest guest
I have read that the brand of a supplement is very important... testing shows the contents vary widely among manufacturers and some don't contain what they say they do. I like to shop at www.iherb.com -- really good prices on good brands. Guest guest
I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed this support group. I have not commented before. I appreciate the journal cites and the writers' concern for proper documentation/verification of assertions, as well as the well-considered discussions. I don't have regular access to health/medical data as I have lived in Japan for the last 4 years as a US government employee. I must rely on the web for access to timely English language information. Until I found this group, I felt terribly uninformed. In my previous life as a university professor in Texas, I had unlimited access to information--the contrast has been a sharp one. My experience with the Japanese diet has been my only compensation--although it can be difficult to determine just what I'm eating at times! It has certainly broadened my palate. So, thanks to those of you who help the rest of us remain informed health-and-wellness information consumers. It has been a joy to follow the various threads that come up on the CR support group!
