DHA, EPA (fish oil) and the brain

DHA and EPA which we get from fish oil (and which fish get from sea

algae) are necessary fatty acids for brain and eye development. Below

are a couple of links that show that deficiencies in these omega-3

fatty acids can result in slower learning performance or inadequate

brain development. The brain is about 60% fat (BT120YD p161), and

fish oil really is brain food.

DHA is even being added to dog food, which improves puppies'

learning abilities substantially.

" A diet low in n-3 fatty acids has little effect on motor function and

activity, but learning is reportedly markedly impaired. The inferior

learning performance in the n-3 fatty acid-deficient group is

associated with a nearly 30% reduction in the average densities of

synaptic vesicles in the terminals of the hippocampal CA1 region. The

diet-induced morphological changes in synapses in the hippocampus of

rats are thus associated with differential learning performance. "

for DHA in the development of the brain.

Hi folks:

This is really amazing. Does anyone else remember the 'old wives

tale' that 'eating fish would give you brains?'

Don't tell me it is really true. Astonishing. Did someone notice

all those years ago that fish eaters seemed to be brighter than non

fish eaters? Or was it pure luck? After all no one ever suggested

any other product would improve yer mental capacity. And there are

lots of other products they could have chosen to label that way

instead. So it really is a very surprising coincidence, if indeed it

is a coincidence. And it was an extraordinarily astute observation

by someone if it is not coincidence.

Rodney.
