Guest guest
50,000 100yo's? The group tracking centenarians better get busy. Journal of the American College of SurgeonsVolume 199 • Number 5 • November 2004SymposiumIntroduction C. , MD, FACS "Nearly everyone has seen the startling demographic data relating to the near-explosive rate of growth of the elderly in our society. Much of this evidence is well summarized in this issue by Loran and Zwischenberger.2 Interesting in this regard is that since 1900, the percentage of Americans over 65 years old has tripled (4.1% in 1900 versus 12.4% in 2000), and the number of individuals over 65 years old has increased 11-fold; perhaps the most telling statistic is that more than 50,000 individuals are aged 100 years old or more, a 35% increase from the 1900 data.3 One clear import is that far more aged patients will be operated on, and we will be called on increasingly to become familiar with the perioperative problems seen commonly in older patients." 2 Loran D.B., Zwischenberger J.B., Thoracic surgery in the elderly.
