The researches used hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), and anti-rheumatic drug on CLL cells from 20 patients. HCQ reduced cell viability, with higher doses bringing a better result. HCQ was found to enhance apoptosis of these cells as early as 5 hours post treatment. About 84% (plus or minus 4% of the cells died at 18 hours after treatment. Bcl-2 anti-apoptopic proteins were reduced. HCQ may offer a new weapon in the treatment of CLL patients.
