Subject: Re: For JW Regarding Bone Fractures

I have a personal interest in this as I have read advice that at my

age (56YO) I shouldn't bench press more than 1/2 my weight. For me

that would mean <75#.

I currently bench 180# and plan to improve on that. My sense is that

if I limited my workouts to 75# I would rather quickly lose my current

level of strength and perhaps even bone mass too.

I think that we all agree that some exercise is better than none. The

question is what constitutes a SAFE level of exercise in terms of

intensity or weight. As far as I am concerned, being able to carry my

own weight in a normal manner and maneuver my body easily is THE right

criterion for selecting the right type of exercise.

Most of the exercises that I do, involve lifting my own weight against

gravity. I do push-ups, crunches, chin-ups, and squats. I feel that

these exercises, without added weight, are enough to keep me in good

shape. If I want a challenge, I can always increase the number of

repetitions.

IMO
