After finding the error in the number of calories per serving in

Trish's cocoa, I went on a field trip to my neighboring Whole Foods

and Giant supermarkets to examine cocoa labels. The results may

surprise you!

This is the cocoa that Trish brought to our attention:

Chatfields Cocoa

Serving size 30g

Tot cal 60 (cal from fat 30)

fat 3g (sat fat 2g)

carb 16g (fiber 1g)

prot 5g

--

calculated serving size: 3+16+5 = 24 grams

calculated calories 3*9 + (16-1)*4 + 5*4 = 107 cal

78% error in calories on package (underestimate)

=================

Lake Champlain unsweetened cocoa (Dutch Cocoa)

10 oz (283g) package - servings per container 10

Serving size 28g

Tot cal 60 (cal from fat 30)

fat 3g (sat fat 0g)

carb 14g (fiber 8g)

prot 8g

--

calculated serving size: 3+14+8 = 25 g

calculated calories 3*9+(14-8)*4+8*4 = 83 cal

38% error in calories on package (underestimate)

==================

Ghirardelli unsweetened cocoa

10 oz (283g) package - servings per container ~47

Serving size 1 tablespoon (6g)

Tot cal 15 (cal from fat 10)

fat 1.5g (sat fat 1g)

carb 3g (fiber 2g)

prot 1g

--

calculated serving size: 1.5+3+1 = 5.5 g

calculated calories 1.5*9+(3-2)*4+1*4 = 21.5 cal

43% error in calories on package (underestimate)

==================

Droste cocoa

8.8 oz (250g) package - servings per container 50

Serving size 1 tablespoon (5g)

Tot cal 15 (cal from fat 9)

fat 1g (sat fat 0.5g)

carb 2g (fiber 1g)

prot <1g

--

calculated serving size: 1+2+1 = 4 g

calculated calories 1*9+(2-1)*4+1*4 = 17 cal

Calories are approximately correct considering rounding errors due to

small serving size.

==================

Hershey's Dutch process cocoa was correct at 20 cal per 5g serving

==================

Scharffenberger cocoa declared 25 calories per 5 gram serving. This

is a 25% OVER the actual calories.
