Guest guest
a few months ago, we had a discussion of energy bars and the ones that came up as being favorites were " larabars " and " perfect 10 " bars which I was looking into. I had said I would do a comparison chart of all of them, (which is just about done finally), but a new one has arrived on the scene that may be the best of them all nutritionally, and the cheapest. They are a new line by Cliff Bars, called Nectar bars. There are 4 varieties and they all contain only dried fruit, nuts, seeds and perhaps some cinnamon or vanilla. I saw them this weekend at whole foods for around 1.50 or 1.70 a bar. I tired one of them and thought it was very good. They also had more fiber than any of the others. So, if you are interested, you can see the nutrition info here... http://www.clifbar.com/eat/eat.cfm?location=nectar regards Jeff PS I have no financial interest in the company. Guest guest
Thanks. Those do indeed appear healthy and yummy. I'm looking forward to your chart. I've had particular difficulty in finding high protein bars that do not also contain high sodium. Any thoughts/recommendations? Guest guest
The " Rebars " in our file under " Food on the Run " , while not particularly high protein are pretty good. Lots of greens, dried fruit etc. Order on-line. on 7/11/2005 12:57 PM, cronzen at truepatriot@... wrote: Thanks. Those do indeed appear healthy and yummy. I'm looking forward to your chart. Guest guest
>>I've had particular difficulty in finding high protein bars that do not also contain high sodium. Any thoughts/recommendations? To me, protein is rarely the issue and I wouldn't look as an enery bar as anything more than something to use in an emergency. They are very calorie dense so we wouldn't get much food volume or satiety for the calories we ingest, which is the opposite of what I would want to look for in a food. So, I would try to get adequate protein from the regular foods in my regular diet and not look for an energy bar to do more than get you through a rare situation. But, in that rare situation, it seems like the Cliff Nectar bars, and the LaraBars, the Perfect 10 bars and the Rebars, may be the best ones out there. Guest guest
Jeff, Thank you. This is really useful information. I carry around energy bars in my bike bag for the rare case that I need carbos for getting up a steep hill. I've nearly blacked out before when I didn't eat enough breakfast. The ingredients in the regular bars always made me shudder. Diane > To me, protein is rarely the issue and I wouldn't look as an enery bar > as anything more than something to use in an emergency.
