Kanzius Recruits Local Patients for New Research

Local inventor Kanzius has initiated a ground-breaking test that

could begin Friday.

For the first time, local cancer patients will be involved in his

radio-frequency research. Kanzius and his research team will be

testing the blood of local patients with a specific kind of leukemia

against radio frequency waves.

If this test is successful, it could mean human trials will begin much

sooner than expected.

" It's the closest thing that you can get to doing an actual person,

without doing the person, is there blood. Their blood is the second

best thing we can use, " says Kanzius.

Kanzius and several local doctors have been preparing the test for

about 8 weeks. The Internal Review Board approved the process

Wednesday night and Kanzius says he hopes to test the first patient

Friday or Monday at the latest.

Kanzius hopes the test will prove that radio frequency waves are

capable of destroying cancer cells in blood. After the test, the blood

samples will be reviewed locally by doctors at Hamot Medical Center,

Saint and the Regional Cancer Center.

This round of tests will be done on the blood of patients with chronic

lymphocytic leukemia. However, officials say the door is open to

testing the blood of patients with different cancers in the future.

" The study itself is really in its infancy. It might be affective not

only for this blood disease, but also virtually many other related

malignancies, " says Dr. Jan Rothman of the Regional Cancer Center.

The study could run as long as eight weeks, but Kanzius and his team

say they expect to have results from each test back within just a

couple days.

They are also still recruiting volunteers who have chronic lymphocytic

leukemia.
