I'm not sure where to draw a line between "fasting" and meal spacing. Humans must have adapted to periods of not eating a lot, maybe for several days. That doesn't mean it's conducive to health or life extension. In fact the regularity of food has been touted as a reason we live longer now than 100 yrs ago.

Daily we can keep stored some extra in our gut usable if we don't get to eat that day. In our case we may have less than the 2400 kcals reported.

A good place to start reading is Modern Nutrition chap 41, "Metabolic Consequences of Starvation". I'd like anyone to point out a single positive item in that chapter that would induce anyone to try fasting.

I've avoided the single meal concept because it would cycle glucose/insulin levels higher and some think that glycation is a key to aging.

Regards.

Hi JW:Me too. Some months ago I emailed Fuhrman and another well known promoter who had a website advocating fasting, and earned his living giving advice on the subject. I asked them if they could refer me to studies from serious sources that showed fasting had health benefits. Neither was able to do so.I believe Mattson should soon be coming out with a nine month study of 'one meal a day in early evening'. This may provide the first good look at the effects of a very modest degree of fasting. If it shows favorable results no doubt somewhat more radical fasting may get tested later.Either way, my preference is to permit other enthusiasts to be the guinea-pigs. I may follow along later if the studies show promise of benefits and negligible risks.Rodney.
