Guest guest
Steve: It would have been better netiquette if you had asked permission to solicit our members before going ahead and posting this. No doubt the answer would have been " yes " , but asking first would have been a lot classier. on 6/19/2005 9:04 PM, Steve Mount at intermittentfasting@... wrote: > Together with Albaugh (another intermittent faster), I've > started a group devoted to intermittent fasting. Guest guest
I've never found good evidence for fasting, intermittent or not, except from 8 PM to 10 AM for blood work. Lotsa comments on the CR groups on the "benefits" - never found any benefits that are specific to fasting. Lotsa "how to" and no "SAFE how to" in refs. Even Dr. Fuhrman's book says over and over to use a physician and it mentions no benefits that I could find. OTOH: 120 yr diet on Page 82: "... in the rat, merely restricting food intake by 50 percent actually decreases UCP expression. When totally deprived of food, the body acts to maintain temperature by turning up the UCPs, thereby decreasing its metabolic efficiency and burning its fat. On the other hand, responding to partial food deprivation, it may just turn down the thermostat. Indeed CRON humans, as well as monkeys, tend to display a body temperature one or more degrees lower than normal. That's what you want. " People keep talking about fasting like it's and easy everyday thing, anyone can do it and it's safe, but I've found no reason to do it and I think anyone who wants to try it should do some heavy reading on sudden death syndrome. Because intermittent fasting is not the samething as caloric restriction! Right!!!
Guest guest
Hi JW: Me too. Some months ago I emailed Fuhrman and another well known promoter who had a website advocating fasting, and earned his living giving advice on the subject. I asked them if they could refer me to studies from serious sources that showed fasting had health benefits. Neither was able to do so. I believe Mattson should soon be coming out with a nine month study of 'one meal a day in early evening'. This may provide the first good look at the effects of a very modest degree of fasting. If it shows favorable results no doubt somewhat more radical fasting may get tested later. Either way, my preference is to permit other enthusiasts to be the guinea-pigs. I may follow along later if the studies show promise of benefits and negligible risks.
