Swimming, delayed onset of aging

A recent copy of Men's Journal relayed the importance of exercise in

the ongoing efforts of human health. The January 2005 issue nominated

swimming as the ultimate exercise for men and women. Which is all well

and good if you have access to a pool or large body of water.

On page 70 they claim that one study shows " swimmers delayed the

natural aging process until age 70. " The assumtion being I believe

that swimming will push the boundries on human life averages. The

problem with most magazines like Men's Journal, Men's Health, Women's

Health, etc. is they will put little blurbs in like the above

statement, with no follow up. They did base their findings on blood

pressure, VO2, etc.

Having just finished Chapter 8 in Beyond the 120 Year Diet I found

that rereading the section on swimming in Men's Journal was an

interesting comparison. Of course not that we shouldn't exercise, but

exercise in and of itself, while improving bio-markers,and increasing

life expectancy within average range, does not extend life beyond

average range.
