Open up, Carlene. It's Bette!Estrogen Woes (And That Includes You, Mister!) Everybody has estrogen–men, women, boys and girls. And while our estrogen comes in differing amounts, we need whatever amount we have to behave itself. I mean, it can cause problems even when it's behaving, but when estrogen goes on a tear, Holey Moley! And nowadays, estrogen's on a tear! side. So, let's talk. Estrogen can cause inflammation. Natural estrogen causes inflammation at times. Bogus estrogen blows the doors off. First, natural estrogen: Estrogen levels of a woman who has periods ebb and flow as she goes through her monthly cycle. Some women don't even notice; a lot of women do. Noticed or not, though, high estrogen levels pump up inflammation. Inflammation plays a big role in auto-immune diseases. If a woman has an autoimmune disease, her disease will flare up as her estrogen–and inflammation–rise. There's not a chance in the world she won't notice. Then there's bogus estrogen. Unlike natural estrogen, bogus estrogen is all high, all the time. And so too, then, is inflammation. Disease is on the way. Pick a dread disease, any dread disease, and inflammation sends it an engraved invitation to visit. And that's not all. When estrogen levels soar, the estrogen binds with your thyroid hormone and takes it out of the game. There goes your metabolism. Your adrenals get thrown for a loop, too. Fact is, bogus estrogen throws the endocrine system into total turmoil so you can be miserable as you slide toward those dread diseases. This doesn't strike me as much of a plan. Where do we get all this ne'er-do-well estrogen? Well, it's lurking everywhere, looking for trouble, but let me mention just four ways we take in bogus estrogen. • Birth control pills: I've talked to women who never recovered from taking birth control pills for just a couple of months. It may be that their endocrine systems were an accident waiting to happen, but nobody should have to pay the price they're paying for something prescribed by doctors with great nonchalance–and no warning. The so-called estrogen in birth control pills is not really what your body knows as estrogen. It's a bogus estrogen that storms in and starts breaking furniture. And a lot of people are on birth control pills without realizing it–through their municipal water supply. Water treatment plants don't remove the medicines that are excreted or thrown into the water system. If you're having trouble getting pregnant–whether a would-be father or mother–consider the water supply. • HRT: The Women's Health Initiative taught us a lot about what happens when synthetic estrogen goes wandering around in our bodies. And now, although doctors still press for its use, HRT is going away. • Soy: This one's a beaut! It takes badly needed minerals out of your body, suppresses your thyroid gland, causes kidney stones and dumps estrogen everywhere. Men, if you want breasts, this is the place. Kills your libido, though. And, oh yeah, it weakens the heart muscle. Then there's that little problem of prostate cancer. Or, since soy's an equal opportunity destroyer, breast cancer. Yeah, I know it's sold as a health food. They lie. Read the science. Just be sure to ignore the `research studies' bought and paid for by soy producers. • Hormones in factory-farm beef, milk and poultry. Factory farms load the livestock up with hormones, to make them grow faster, and antibiotics, to tame the diseases caused from eating grains, which they can't handle. Get grass-fed beef and free range chickens for best nutrition and no hormones. Http://EatWild.com lists sources by area. Bottom line: Avoid bogus estrogen. It's a killer. In case you're wondering, of course there are ways to fight back. Fighting back is what I talk about. Until next time then.God is good, Bette Dowdell http://TooPoopedToParticipate.com P.S. Remember.
