C A A r t s - F u l l S t o r y : -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 'Fast Food Nation' becoming a movie Last Updated Fri, 20 May 2005 14:31:38 EDT CBC Arts LOS ANGELES - Director Linklater, the filmmaker behind Dazed and Confused, is set to make a big-screen version of the book Fast Food Nation. Written by journalist Schlosser, Fast Food Nation is a damning exploration of how restaurant chains like Mc's have changed North American culture. The book has caused a sensation since it was published in 2001, giving ammunition to those who believe that the fast-food industry is responsible for, among other things, increasing the rate of obesity in the U.S. Schlosser helped Linklater write the script for the big-screen adaptation. It's not known if the film will be a documentary, but the book does not have a straightforward narrative: instead, it is an extended piece of reportage that follows Schlosser as he travels around the U.S. chronicling the history and effects of fast food. With the likes of Before Sunset and Slacker on his filmography, Austin, Tex.-based Linklater is known chiefly as a director of scripted comedies. The Daily Variety trade paper reported this week that actress Catalina Sandino Moreno (the -nominated star of Full of Grace) will appear in Fast Food Nation – one sign that it may be some sort of hybrid creation. The film will start shooting in the fall. Linklater's remake of The Bad News Bears is set to open in July. Among the claims that Schlosser makes in Fast Food Nation are that American children now get about one quarter of their total vegetable servings in the form of French fries or potato chips, and that the golden arches are a more widely recognized symbol than the Christian cross.
