Act Now - Help Fight Off Cancer Research Funding Cuts

________________________________________

The House of Representatives has passed legislation (HR 1) that will

dramatically cut cancer research funding, including a $1.6 billion budget

cut to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a $1.3 billion budget cut

to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

We need your help now! Urge your senators to oppose these cuts and tell your

representatives that you reject their cuts and urge them to return funding

to cancer research now!

You have two options to contact your elected officials.

1) The first is to click the " Click here to take action! " link below and

send a pre-drafted, editable email to Congress.

2) The second is to call the Senate switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask

for your senator by name or call the House switchboard at (202) 225-3121 and

ask for your representative by name. If you are unsure who your elected

officials are, you can find out by using LLS's Legislator Search tool.

Talking Points If You Call Your Elected Officials

.. Cancer touches everyone - one out of two men and one out of three women is

projected to get a cancer diagnosis at some point in their life.

.. We have made tremendous progress in the fight against cancer over the past

forty years. However, the funding levels proposed in HR 1 put that progress

at risk.

.. Decreased funding will mean fewer research projects being supported and

fewer people having access to potentially lifesaving clinical trials.

.. Decreased funding will also slow the nation's economic recovery. It is

estimated that every research dollar provided by NIH generates two dollars

in economic growth.

.. Additionally, at least half of all cancer deaths can be prevented or

detected early simply by using the knowledge and tools that are already

available to us today. Funding for CDC cancer programs is proven to help

reduce cancer incidence.

.. As a constituent and advocate for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and all

blood cancer patients, I am calling on Congress to maintain support for

funding cancer research and reject the funding cuts included in HR 1 for the

National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Conteol and

Prevention.

.. Restoring funding for NIH and CDC won't put us back on top, but it will

put us back on track toward our goal of ending suffering and death from

cancer.

All the best,

~ Karl
