To that is added 25% for ambulating, and more for higher activity levels. But, IMO, it's still important to search out the intake that supports the right weight/activity level for the individual. I found the HB early on and just guessed 200 was my up and around, and I notice the cornell is 388 for me. I think it overstates the req't for CRONies. I've been less than that intake for 5 yrs, and rarely do I eat more unless I've done a lot of labor (not usual). I supposed if I worked a regular job (retired), it might have to be higher, but I'd still find that level of lowest intake. The numbers that come out of H-B are a good approximation to start out with. But, like JW, I also have found that my actual energy expenditure is less than that predicted by H-B. So my suggestion is to use H-B to get a rough idea of your resting metabolic rate (RMR), then to get a more accurate fix, track your caloric intake for a couple of months while plotting your 7 am weight daily (at Fitday, perhaps?) so that you can distinguish the trend, if any, from the substantial daily 'noise' in the weight data. If it came out say 2300 RMR, would I start eating more? no. If it came out 1500 (not likely), would I eat more or less? I think those are just interesting data after I found out what I should eat. I had one friend a lady, that found hers was 2300 and she was heavy so she had to start cycling to use it up? Is that what we want to do? So she'd rather eat more and cycle a lot to burn it. Doesn't that create more free radicals? Thanks to Tony I can say I'm 27% CR. But I still need to have a weight goal for each year, I think, but maybe I don't have to follow the age/weight/BMR projected by the HB. Or the measured RMR, either. Maybe the heart doesn't age as fast at reduced intake? I kinda like being able to handle RR ties for my landscaping, at 69yo, 178#, 1800 kcals.
