Guest guest
Hi folks: A few numbers from the most recent fruit fly study done at University College London, previously posted here a couple of weeks ago: In normal circumstances not many fruit flies live beyond age 40 days. So perhaps 40 days in fruit flies is equivalent to 100 years in humans ........... and 30 days in fruit flies approximately the equivalent of 75 years in humans, perhaps. In the UCL study 87% of non-restricted flies had died by age 30 days. Of flies whose diet was carb-restricted only (no restriction of fat/protein) 78% had died by age 30 days. A pretty good improvement, right? Seventy percent more were still alive. Of flies whose diet was fat/protein restricted only (no restriction of carbs) only 21% had died by age 30 days! Extraordinary! SIX TIMES as many were still alive, compared with the non-restricted flies. Of flies in whose diet fat, protein and carbs were all restricted, 11% had died by age 30 days. So, is it the fat that most needs to be restricted? Or is it the protein? Keep watching this space to find out, hopefully by the end of the year. Rodney.
