Bad news. Law of diminishing returns?

* Phase II success rates fall

Success rates of Phase II clinical trials were 18% in 2008 and 2009, down from

28% in 2006 and 2007, according to a study published in Nature Reviews Drug

Discovery by the Centre for Medicines Research, which looked at data from the

trials of 16 drugmakers.

More than half found insufficient efficacy, and many were in the same

therapeutic areas. " Strategic failures result from too many companies chasing

the same targets or because the drug was a long shot (and) wishful thinking, "

study author Arrowsmith said.
