Although we know that low blood pressure is important and beneficial, one is

forced to wonder to what extent the selection of specific benchmarks is the

result of pressure from pharmaceutical companies with their unquenchable thirst

for ever-more-expanded markets.

Hi folks:

" Dr. Gabe Mirkin's Fitness and Health E-Zine

High Blood Pressure and Lifestyle

The current guidelines state that high blood pressure is

any value over 120 when the heart contracts and over 80 when it

relaxes. Ninety-one percent of Americans will suffer from high

blood pressure, which causes heart attacks, strokes, and kidney

damage. "

NINETY-ONE PERCENT???? WOW.

Well, HTN is pretty well saturated with drugs already from 6$ per 100 pills to 300$ per 100 pills. Their best gains, I would guess might be in sexual problems, weight control, lipid control, having no really good pill to "cure" HTN, BPH, cancer, CVD, etc.

The 91 % figure is probably the fact that most will get higher pressure sooner or later. Due to obesity, that's a big one right there, or kidney problems, or Type II DM, or atherosclerosis/CVD, or athero/PVD (peripheral vascular disease).

I find the 120/80 just a reference to what you might get to with weight reduction, etc, but 140/90 is the treatment level (non diabetic). Judging from the pills sold to treat 90 million patients, 91 % might be reasonable, including all those between those levels, and all those that won't test their BP, for fear it will hurt their flight or other status.

As I recall, stroke is number 4 for mortality, and a lot of people seem to get them before they die.

Regards.
