Guest guest
Depression & Fish Oil, what the Army is looking at. A current research study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, showed men in the service with low levels of an omega-3 fatty acid knownas DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) were 62% more likely to commit suicide. Blood samples were taken from 800 service members from 2002 to 2008 andwho months later committed suicide, with blood samples taken from 800other service members. The Army suicide rate reached 22 per 10,000 last year, much higher than civiliansof the same age group. These findings do not say that fish oil is a way to deter suicides, but may helpto relieve symptoms of certain depressions. More research is needed, but even so,the potential psychiatric benefits of omega-3 could be a factor in reducing suicides. Omega-3 is found in fatty fish such as wild salmon, cod, halibut, albacore tuna, sardines, anchovies, walnuts, krill oil and flax seeds. I take 1000 mg. of Antarctic Krill Oil daily, plus eat fatty fish twice weekly Be Well, Dr. Earl Mindell, R.Ph., M.H. and Ph.d.
