Hi All,

The not yet in Medline last issue of Lancet has four letters commenting on a

previous Lancet paper, which is pdf available and pdfs of all the four letters

are

available.

First, the paper is:

Singh RB, Dubnov G, Niaz MA, Ghosh S, Singh R, Rastogi SS, Manor O, Pella D,

Berry

EM.

Effect of an Indo-Mediterranean diet on progression of coronary artery disease

in

high risk patients (Indo-Mediterranean Diet Heart Study): a randomised

single-blind

trial.

Lancet. 2002 Nov 9;360(9344):1455-61.

PMID: 12433513

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve & db=pubmed & dopt=Abstra\

ct & list_uids=12433513 & query_hl=8

The letters basically totally discredit the veracity of the findings, although

the

paper was reviewed by four expert Peer Reviewers. The experiments were reported

to

have not been possible, considering the capacity of the research facilities of

the

Singh et al laboratories. The data were “too good to be true”, with respect to

how

beneficial the Mediterranean dieters responding to the diets and the small

standard

deviations. Original data and patients were poorly corroborated and identified.

There was no adequate in-site ethics and standards review committee.

The Indo-Mediterranean diet revisited

Lancet Jul 30;366 (9483):353-354

Having been an " expert peer reviewer " (albeit not in the field of

nutrition), I can see how bad papers can still get through the review

process. Most of the real experts are far too busy to deal with

reviewing outside papers. It's volunteer work. The task usually gets

passed to the newer, less experienced staff.

However, when I've passed along a paper to a new guy for reviewing, I

tell him to review it in his own name, not mine!
