Diane Walter pointed out an article comparing soy vs. whey protein

bars. The conclusion that soy is better should not come as a surprise

since co-author Ari Babaknia is the founder of DrSoy Inc. His picture

appears on the home page of the DrSoy website. (http://www.drsoy.com/)

Dr. Babaknia's background seems to be gynecology, rather than

nutrition, based on his list of publications:

Papers like this are virtually worthless as sources of objective

information when the author(s) can gain financially from the specific

outcome of the results which they publish.

Conclusions: Soy and whey protein bar products both promoted exercise

training-induced lean body mass gain, but the soy had the added

benefit of preserving two aspects of antioxidant function.

Hi Tony,

While I agree that we should treat conclusions of the paper with a

grain of salt because it appears the research (conducted at Ohio State

University) was financed by DrSoy, I disagree that the conclusions are

virtually worthless.

First, the result of the somewhat limited research --9 subjects in 3

categories-- was not that " soy is better than whey " . The conclusions

were that 1) protein supplementation of either whey or soy increased

LBM, and 2) the group that supplemented with soy had improved

antioxidant function.

This second conclusion has been shown in other research as well, not

(at least visibly) related to DrSoy. For instance:

oxidation resistance

Even if DrSoy had not been involved in the research at all, I would

have looked to other sources to validate the conclusions, simply

because of the limited number of subjects in the study. But I firmly

believe that the topic is worth further investigation.
