Website: http://ishaqgeer.googlepages.com New Technologies to Combat Menace of Spurious Medicinesnetrumgroups (DOT) comDate: Sunday, 29 June, 2008, 3:09 PM Dear Dr. Vijay: I fully agree with the predicaments and dilemmas expressed by you vis-a-vis on the ground impact of new upcoming technologies and their practical implementation aspects. Here I endorse the views expressed by Zeenat that if our public continues to be naive and gullible, no technology on earth can really help us get rid of this menace completely. Therefore to achieve optimal success, we need to adopt a holistic approach wherein first of all the technology itself should be completely foolproof/tamper- proof, then our public should be made aware of its modalities, govt. should work out methods and means to weed out corruption from our DRAs and all other players like consumer associations, doctors, patients, druggists etc should join hands towards achieving the goal of having genuine medicines only at our drug stores. There are as many as 22 new upcoming technologies that have been proposed and presented by various reputed global organizations in first IMPACT meeting on technologies to combat spurious medicines. One technology is called The FractureCode that uses lines positioned in the code window generated to produce a unique random “fingerprint†FCPrefix data used as a descriptor to minimize database search time and to guarantee uniqueness of the entire code. The FractureCode Corporation claims that is code is extremely secure, cannot be copied, reproduced or manipulated; Has High degree of redundancy; is ‘dumb’ and remains ‘dumb’; Cannot be reverse engineered;isUnobtrusive, can be overtly or covertly integrated into pack design; Can be used on all known pack formats, including blister foils, labels, packs, etc. Another presentation is that of Aegate Technology that increases confidence in patient safety by authentication of medicines at the point of dispensing. It provides a distinct communications channel between pharmacists, pharmaceutical companies and professional bodies. They claim that it is a Flexible technology, a Low cost solution that uses unique/mass serialised bar codes, provides Rapid implementation and has Low infrastructure needs. Aegate will work with multiple serialisation methods as well as with different scanning technologies. Another presentation by Supply Scape Technology uses RX-Authentication and Rx-Pedigree models for identifying counterfeit medical products and works on the “Track and Trace†Principle described in my earlier post. Members can read details about all 22 new technologies on IMPACT website where they are given in PDF format. URL is: http://www.who. int/impact/ en Comments of all members on these technologies are solicited. One of them is attached herewith. With regards Dr. Geer M.
