TechnologyWe have consistently set the pace in innovating and adapting technology to suit Indian conditions and needs. It is this vast experience and expertise which makes it well equipped to meet the challenges of applying advanced technology in vaccine production. Among the major equipments available in the Institute are large bacterial fermentors, Zonal ultra centrifuge, freeze drier, several bulk autoclaves, Hot-air ovens, filling machines, large cold rooms and deep freezers etc. Full fledged facility is available for Research and Development work which includes radioisotope handling and all related equipments FPLC system, ultra centrifuge, ELISA reader and equipment for molecular biology work.The Institute is recognized by the Tamilnadu Dr. M. G. R. Medical University, Madras for M.D degree in Microbiology and by the Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore for Ph.D. Degree in Microbiology in the faculty of Science.The Institute has a well -faciliated library also. The Library is one of the best libraries in the South India. It is a special library with limited number of essential books in the field of Vaccinology, Biotechnology, Pharmacology and Microbiology. For mot of the periodical titles, back volumes are available from 1950 and for few

1920 onwards. Many scientist and trainees from various institutions utilize the library facilities. The library has stocked with 4192 books and 12022 bound volumes, 16 International journals, 14 Indian Journals and WHO Publications (Global subscription).

Milestones1907 Manufacture of Neural Tissue Antirabies Vaccine.1957 Isolation of Asian Flue Virus during the pandemic and development of Influenza vaccine against the same virus.1970 For the first time in India PII, Coonoor developed, produced and supplied BPL inactivated Rabies Vaccine, which made the treatment easier, cheaper with less dose, injections and side effects with a vaccine of increased potency.1970 For the first time in India, PII Coonoor developed and produced

indigenous Oral Polio Vaccine Trivalent (Sabin).1982 Production of DPT group of vaccines for the National Programme of Immunization.1988 Production of Tissue Culture Rabies Vaccine for Canine Prophylaxis, a milestone in the control of rabies.2001 For the first time in India PII, Coonoor, amongst Government controlled Institutions, developed and released Vero Cell Derived DNA purified Rabies Vaccine for human use at an affordable price to common man.

AchievementsResearch work on Rabies, Influenza, Adeno and other viruses, introduction of BPL inactivated brain tissue rabies vaccine for the first time in the country in the year 1970, production and release of more than one million doses of totally indigenous Oral Polio Vaccine, Substantial contribution of DTP Vaccines every year to the National Programme of Immunization and development of Vero Cell based vaccine for humans and canines by indigenous technology.The Institute’s dream is to be a model Institute with the introduction of modern processes and latest GMP facilities and be a leader in vaccinology in the country.
