Dear SanthoshIt is indeed true, also with South Indian names. For example if you take my name 'Keshetti Srisailam', in which 'Keshetti' is my surname. While abbreviating some researchers quote 'K Srisailam' and others will use 'S Keshetti'You can write the names when you exactly know them. I feel it is better to search for previous publications of the authorsAnd if you are preparing a manuscript for a particular journal, you search previous publications in that journal firstYou can also visit the author's institutional websiteDr. K. Dear Netrumians,

Traditionally (in the west - USA, Europe) names are written with the First name (Maiden name) followed by the Middle name which is followed by the Surname. If a person does not have a middle name, then first name followed by Surname. e.g. if a person's name is Jackie Chan, it is assumed Jackie is the first name (the person's own name) and Chan is the surname (father's or family name).

However, in vancouver format, what is written is the surname with the first letter of the first name as initials. This is contrary to what is generally done in India, where the initials signify the surname.

If you take a name like Indira Gandhi; in India it will be G.Indira whereas in the west it will be I.Gandhi. If mentioning in Vancouver Format, it has to be Gandhi I.

Hope this clarifies a bit.

i am glad to see everyone interact with such enthusiasm. As pointed out the right

way is to have surname and then initials as per vancouver style. But incase of

errors we must visit the authors institutional site and see the full name and

search by both surname and initials.

Keep networking
