As you indicated, with so many software being available the choice indeed gets confusing. I am trying to outline from my experience of using several of them over the years as to what I have learned about different software. I am interested to learn from the experience of others in this forum as well.As we may note here, in this wikipedia entry they have not distinguished between web based depositories o bibliographic information (aigaaion, citeulike, connotea, etc ...), bibtex front end (jab ref, bibus for example), web based bibliography and citation management (refbase etc ...), and desktop/web based integrated bibliography/citation management software (endnote, refman, Mendeley, zotero). While we are at it, it's important to distinguish between bibliographic database management and citation management process itself. While bibliographic database management alone involves storage and retrieval of relevant bibliographic data, we also want bibliographic databases to seamlessly integrate with our word processors or integrate with our writing workflow. Thus, usually we need bibliography software to go beyond simply store references and be just citation databases. They need to serve broader goals for most authors as citation managers. In general, the choice of a citation management software depends on the type of work one does, the complexity of requirement, and the context of work, research, and publications. Different software have different features that need considerations. If one works primarily with plain text such as latex (a format that I personally prefer because of aesthetics of writing and the level of control it offers), one needs nothing more than bibtex (some front end software implementation such as jabref indeed helps). While we are on this, has anyone here tried jab ref+freemind ? The software is known as "Sciplore mind mapping" (http://sciplore.org/software/sciplore_mindmapping/), and is an excellent combination of what can be done combining mind mapping with bibtex based citation management for those of us who like that way of work. At the other extreme are people who really need more sophisticated control of their bibliography management because they work with thousands of articles at once for example working on systematic reviews and meta analyses where one needs to store PDFs or other full text access and they want the citation management software to automate search for the specific citation across different databases, then seamlessly store the citations in the database and call them whenever they need but more importantly for working they need to identify and remove duplicates, and run programmes. These functions require a complex software such as endnote or refman, but the associated problem here is that, these software are only available for windows/Mac platform, so, those who use linux cannot use them other than using some form of windows based software implementation such as "wine" emulation etc. In between, we have hybrid somewhat less powerful but extremely useful software such as Mendeley, Zotero, and Wizfolio. Each of these three software has both a web based online social component of storing and retrieving citations, and an offline desktop version of the software that integrates very well with commonly used word processing software such as open office or ms word. The other advantage of these software is their compatibility with different platforms (windows, Linux, Mac), and they are available free of cost (at least limited versions, some have pay as you use such as Wizfolio). So the bottom-line is, there cannot be a concept such as the best bibliography management software and the battle lines continue to be drawn depending on your specific requirement. Thats great that we have sooo many softwares available for managing our references. I further wanted to go into the details of this and wanted to know which is the best. I AM NOW CONFUSED . AFTER VISITING THE SITE MENTIONED BELOW.

A very minor correction, Dr Chaturvedi. If you use linux, you can use Refman or Endnote but you may have to use some form of terminal emulator (like Wine for example). No problems if you use Macs, because Mac computers have excellent bibliography management software such as Papers (http://www.mekentosj.com/papers/), and Endnote has Mac versions.

Note also the consideration that our esteemed moderator Vijay sir has just put up. These are good questions to ask in all situations while selecting a bibliographic software.Thank you for your kind words.

Dear Arin Basu

Its indeed great pleasure and honor to have you here on netrum, clarifying everyone's doubts and adding on to the information.

So that's what I have understood

- Those who work with thousands of articles at once for example ------systematic reviews and meta analyses require complex softwares such as endnote or refman, problem with these is that, these software are only available for windows/Mac platform, so, those who use linux cannot use them..

once again thank you so much for your valable inputs that will add to the knowledge of everyone.MAY GOD BLESS YOU.Also thanks to Dr. THAWANI for providing a platform to discuss and learn.
