Self medication may not be safe, leading to adverse effects in consumers and

also possible antimicrobial resistance

self medication i believe is not totally wrong if OTC's are the drugs used.

However rational use of drugs should be restricted to precsription only

medicines

Dear NetrumiansWhat we should promote is responsible self medication. To explain, if a person has a headache - he should be able to take paracetamol may be for one or two doses. However, if the headache lasts for two or three days he/she should see a doctor. It is our responsibility to educate consumers on responsible self medication.

Dear NetrumiansSrilanka has come out with a very good patient's formulary giving information on commonly prescribed medicines. There are also some information available for visually challenged and hearing impaired people.

Hi

Yes we should worry coz some of those drugs approved to be OTCs can actually

cause serious side effects if over used. So why not check on them also?

Dear leThe problem of antimicrobial resistance has to be tackled by a many pronged approach. Antibiotics should not be sold in a pharmacy without a prescription. Legislation is in place, but it is not being implemented. Consumer education should be a priority. Unfortunately it is not so.

Hi

That's a very good topic cause in developing countries most illnesses are treated dy self-medication. But as it is an extensive topic it whould be better to seprate it and then talk about each section. sections such as antibiotic self-medication, self-medication with OTCs and ... .

Dear members, Whenever a medicine is being purchased, the pharmacist should explain the patient about the problems which can arise with self medication and staple a leaflet explaining how, when to take the drug (at the most 2 or 3 doses) and possible problems with the drug, when to report to doctor etc. along with the pack. Anupama

Self medication can be either appropriate or inappropriate depending on the circmstances.

Hi Shahzin,

Even in India the conditions are no different.

The country as such has not done much in this area.

Sporadic, isolated attempts are there to educate the people about the dangers

associated with self medication of diseases.

However self medictaion of simple, common ailments is welcome.

1.When this is almost true that selling of antibiotics without prescription can not be curbed or the administartion has failed to implement this rule, the training of retailers (pharmacists) for propoer use of antibiotics may improve??? Just wondering! At this moment it is not legal in Indian Legislation.

2. It is not just selling of rampant antibiotics at pharmacy, there are prescriptions too.

Hi,

The WHO training module for promoting rational use of medicines in community

quotes many studies where the community and pharmacist behaviour could be

changed after peoper training. Yes, it is worth emulating but is time consuming.

It is said that " practice makes a person perfect " . The well known management

Guru Mr Shiv Khera explains that if the practice is wrong, the perfection

achieved will be wrong! A person practicing wrong practice will lead to

perpetuiting wrongs.

Hence it should be " perfect practice makes a person perfect " .

Dear All,

Self medication especially with Antibiotics is realy a problem in India. There are several reasons behind it as per the opinion of the experts,

Existing Drug laws prohibiting self medication with antibiotics(all antibiotics are included under Schedule H), but that provisions are hardly implemented. There are lot of apprehension about the effectiveness of a new legislation.

Effective measures may be- Improving public awareness, awareness amongst Retail shop owners, Retail shop workers.

Sometimes wrong /over prescription of antibiotics pose more problem than self medication. Therefore, rational prescribing by physicians may be an important measure.
