Guest guest
Connie, Thanks so much for your thoughts concerning the Iraq situation. You are doing a good thing by helping the teacher out! I tell you, with 'No Child Left Behind' so many teachers are left teaching curriculum that they are not specialized in! It has taken many years for Texas to get to where we are with standardized testing, and believe me, it still has it's faults. But it is a place to start, and since the President is from Texas, I guess it's the path we are all going down! As an ex school board trustee, and my son is just about to graduate Texas Tech with his Agricultural Education degree, I've had to learn so much about this situation. I'm still in a dazed state!! Good Luck!! Marcie (PPMS)
Guest guest
Marcie, This No Child Left Behind is good in lots of ways, but I could go on for pages about the "challenges" it involves. The school where I taught (and, of course, where the teachers I help are) has a large population of special ed students and students who are on IEP's. But when the students are tested, all of them are thrown into the mix. Because of this (and other factors) the school is put on notice that improvements have to be made. I think sometimes I am just grateful that I'm a RETIRED teacher. I agree with the dazed state comment! Guest guest
Connie, As I said, it still has faults! I worked as an assistant to a Jr High English teacher before running for the school board. It sometimes appeared to me that we were just teaching for a test. It was as if somewhere along the way, we lost sight of a good solid foundation on which the students could build, Just as long as they can pass the all important TEAMS, TAAS, and now TEKS test!!! It's a sore spot with many teachers. If more parents were aware of the focus put on the test, it might help, but in small town Texas (as anywhere I'm sure) lots of parents are so busy trying to make a living and raise their kids that they don't have time to take on the education system! I'll quit ranting! I do know the challenges facing educators. Their jobs depend on it! Catch 22??
