Guest guest
Dear Dr. Sachin Hiware, Warm regards from Nepal, Since, I have already worked as drug information and pharmacovigilance officer in one of the regional drug information centers of Nepal. I would like to share some of the things which might be relevant to you. Definitely different primary secondary and tertiary drug information resources plus a trained drug information specialist as highlighted by Mr. Varun Talla will be key components on establishing drug information center. Beside that, many operational aspects should be clearly analyzed before operating the center. Some of the aspects are- 1) Promotion: Before starting DIC, you should promote the DIC, otherwise people might not know about the availability of the service. Personally, I believe opening DIC with little investment as pilot program (focused on single institution) will be suitable. When the concept of DIC will be well accepted in a setting, then promotion outside a single institute can be planned. 2) Mode of communication: Should be careful about how DI request will be collected and sent. At pilot level, interdepartmental telephone/electronic msg/email service, collection of DI request during ward rounds, DI collection booths, etc can be practiced. However, when we want to extend the service hotline numbers will be appropriate. 3) Documentation: Forms should be designed to document all the DI queries requested to the center and also for the answer provided. All those forms should be documented for future reference. 4) Training of the DI specialist: The people with the knowledge on pharmacology and medicine may be not always appropriate to provide DI centre. They should be well trained on how to provide DI- especially should be trained about critical appraisal, communication, different databases, etc. One good news for us is that- International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) is organizing its annual congress this year in India (Hyderabad). Pharmacy Information Section of FIP is organizing training program on Drug Information as a presatellite program in the Congress. Please visit http://www.fip.org/hyderabad2011/hyderabad_outline 5) Operational Cost: To establish DI is relative easier than sustaining it. There are many cases where already established DIC has been closed because of economical reasons. 6) Network and Collaboration: We may not have budget to bring latest editions of all DI resources. It will be beneficial if we can collaborate with other DICs in our own/international settings. Networking among the DICs will be key to reduce operational cost of DIC. 7) Others program associated with DI: With same DI resources, you can plan for starting pharmacovigilance, patient counselling, contribution on hospital formulary development, participation on Drug and Therapeutic Committee (DTC) and others. At last, I am attaching a file which might be relevant and of more interest to you. Good luck for establishing DIC. Thank you very much Best Wishes, Saval Khanal, B.Pharm, MSc.
