Guest guest
For anyone reading the link Steph gave below: PGW = Persian Gulf War PB = pyridostigmine bromine, a nerve agent. In the section subtitled "Mechanism of Bromism", the author says "It is assumed that bromide acts by replacing part of the chloride in the body (Blumberg and Nelp, 1966)." Isn't this wrong? I thought it was because bromide was replacing iodide in the body. If they're starting out with the incorrect assumption that the bromide is replacing part of the chloride, seems like many other things could be wrong, such as the treatments. In the very last paragraph, the article discussed a modern-day woman who had taken a triple bromide elixir for 7 years, prescribed for a post-head-injury seizure condition, who had a high serum bromide level. She was treated with isotonic saline and daily injections of mercaptomerin sodium (Thiomeri). Thiomeri is a mercury containing diuretic. Seems rather barbaric to me, to be injecting a mercury-containing drug to cure bizarre behavior and hallucinations. Gives me the shivers. Lynn Bromism I found this chapter in a military guide today on Bromism. I thought some of you might find it interesting. http://www.gulflink.osd.mil/library/randrep/pb_paper/mr1018.2.chap10.html
Guest guest
Just to chime in a little bit here. I was on PB during my twenties (now 53) for myasthenia gravis. Let me tell you, if you need it, it is a wonderful drug! I had such horrible unexplained muscle weakness, and it was progressive. On the other hand, the first remission I had, although temporary, I accidentally overdosed myself with PB and that's no fun either! Ah, the memories..... Of course, I am paying the price of that plus Mountain Dew now, and my firstborn, conceived one month after I went into remission from MG, may also be paying a price. He is getting a loading test soon. But you know, you can only do your best with the knowledge and guidance that you have at the time. Guest guest
aka " Mestinon " I will attest to it's short half-life also, as mentioned in the article about the Gulf War Veterans. I could certainly tell when my PB/Mestinon was running out and my next dose was due. I was on a four hour schedule and at 3 hours 45 minutes I always felt weak and knew my time was almost up! It was a medicine that always had to be taken with protein so it would be absorbed more slowly. I know, more than you all wanted to know.
