You have a difficult case. I would lay off the sea veggies though. I would

add some selenium and magnesium plus Vit C to help your toxic nodule. Can

you apply the iodine topically to your neck? Maybe that would help as a

transdermal solution.

Thanks everyone for the Sea Adine answers.

I was untreated for hypothyroidism for 30 years after a partial thyroidectomy which caused every hypo symptom! I thought I had porphyria too! you sound like a person who needs good thyroid/adrenal treatment including the right amount of iodine. keep it in mind when you get sick of all the testing and illness.

Can you get another opinion? Drs are so ignorant about hypothyroidism

they can't recognize it. What kind of tests have they done to make

these disgnoses?

All I can say is thanks....I have been going through absolute hell for 8 years and just gave up for about 4....I look in my refrig and its scary to eat...no kidding.

I have been suffering really bad with severe anxiety for a very long time that is debillitating . Then when I eat cetain foods it seems....Wham..a severe attack of something ?

I got a very metallic taste in my mouth after almost killing myself with tiny mcg ammounts of iodine....so confused its almost like being in a nightmare.

Thanks for your concern....Ron

Thanks....I just started taking selenium yesterday...It didnt seem to agree with me after not taking it for a loooong time. I also had a crap diet and wasnt getting any iodized salt at all.

Now im seem to be boucing back and forth between hypo and hyper. I understand that minerals have alot to do with it too...but have to be very cautios at the moment.

I havent been diagnosed with a nodule , and hope I dont have one. My body doesnt seem to be doing the right thing with iodine , but potassium iodide doesnt seen to bother me.

Need the sometimes idiot Drs to run the Free t3 and Free t4 tests.....so frustrated.....Thanks

When presenting in the ER ...I get a tsh and maybe a t4.......thats it and lots of tranquilizers that DONT help sometimes at all.

Minerals have alot to do with it too...but I found out that I must be very very cautios.

I seem to go between hypo and hyper easily....based on symptoms only.

Something wierd is that I can take potassium iodide....but dont be able to even touch the tinyiest ammount of iodine ? were talking miniscule ammounts...not take , just touch...screaming metabolism that is like a severe panick attack that almost sends me into atrial fib......And than this metallic taste in my mouth ??

Stay away from iodized salt. The brine used to clean it is toxic. Full of chlorides that inhibit thyroid hormone production. Maybe a methylated form of the selenium would work better. How about B12 do you take that? Methylcobalamin might be easier since it is already in the reduced form.

Ron if you can get to a good doctor here is what you need to check:

TSH

Free T3

Free T4

TPO Ab

Tg Ab

Ferritin / Iron

B12

These need to be done at a bare minimum. Also if you can test for the MTHFR gene mutation (You can search the history of this group to find out more info) this may shed light on the situation as this mutation can cause some really bad reactions in the body - tied to autism and heart conditions.

I suspect your hyper hypo swings are due to an autoimmune thyroid disease. Probably hashimotos which would be identified by the TPO Ab and Tg Ab testing. Some people with hashi's will have a reaction like you describe when taking iodine.

It is like my teeth are metallic and vcery sensitive....reminds me of years ago when I had a amalgam filling....I was also using small ammounts of iodized salt as my adrenals are shot I think.......? Im wondering if the potassium iodide is blocking the thyroid so its forcing the adrenals to do double duty with lots of ecess adrenaline cause I cant seem to produce sufficent cortisol...? One of my theorys...because I suddenly have very high blood sugar that also drops very very low.....no adrenal response at all.....just crashes.

Be sure your doc checks you for celiac. They often don't,

but porphyria is a common side-effect of that disease (as

are a lot of other weird symptoms). Google " porphyria celiac " .

The celiac blood test isn't all that accurate, but it's cheap

and easy and catches the more serious cases.

Thank you so much.

I actually have asked for most of theese but dont get them. I had a severe attack on my body of either porphyria or something immune about 2 months ago and the ER drs wouldnt do anything other than "tell" me that I need a good endo workup....I pleaded with them to put me in the hospital...lol No insurance...no treatment. I have insurance now but have to wait.

I had 2 nuclear scans looking for a pheochromocytoma 6 years ago...now wondering what all that I131 radiation really did to me ?

Im keeping this email...thanks soooo much

If you have BP issues then you need unrefined salt in your diet. Make sure you drink enough water too. The added sodium will increase the potassium in your cells and help with the BP issues. Also the salt will help the adrenals and the sodium iodine symporters to help your thyroid as well since this is how the iodide is pulled into the cells.

You can order the tests yourself on the Internet. Which is what I did ...

I got tired of trying to convince the docs. Also, if you are diagnosed with

celiac it kills your insurance. Insurance companies really don't like

it, because

it's associated with short, sick, life spans unless you stick to a diet (and the

insurance companies don't think anyone sticks to a diet). Also the various

celiac groups offer " free screening tests " at fairs and other events.

You can also decide to stop eating any gluten and see what happens.

For some people this works ... there is an immediate effect. But it takes

some people months or years to heal, so the effect can take a long time

to notice, which is where testing is better.

Dr. Fine's stool test (www.finerhealth.com) is probably

the most accurate. The problem with the IgA test is that

a lot of people who react to gluten simply don't produce

huge quantities of the antibodies they test for.

Dr. Fasano recently talked about another issue though: the

only real test they have now is for celiac. But the mechanism

of celiac is " autoimmune " ... the body is attacking itself, and

specifically in the gut. So the tests for celiac look for an autoimmune

attack to the gut.

But ... a far larger group of people react to gluten without

this particular reaction. Instead of reacting with an autoimmune

attack to the gut, they react with an attack to the pancreas or thyroid,

or with brain issues. There aren't any standard tests for this: they

can test if you have anti-thyroid antibodies, but only a few studies

have studied whether these can be linked to gluten (and yes,

they can be).

Dr. Fine's test tests for levels of IgA in the gut (which is where

it is produced). It's the only test of that kind, and it's patented

to him. From the years I've been following it though, it seems

accurate, and it's surprisingly easy to take (albeit *weird* ...

" stool samples " aren't exactly a household word ...).

But the state of research about gluten is very much in flux.

They are finding out more and more stuff about it, and

all of it is pretty depressing.

This one specifically talks about " gluten sensitivity " vs " celiac " :

I always wondered about the possibility of having a selenium defficency causing a person to NEVER test positive for an antibodies , even though they have severe symptoms ?

almost like HIV , or immune defficency syndrome ?

Then when they try to enhance their wrecked health with nutritional supplements the bodies own immune system revs up and attacks its self ?

Would any of this make sense ?--- On Mon, 8/11/08,
