Hi Steph,

What do you think taking supplemental Tyrosine along with daily Iodine might do? Or, is it unneccessary for someone taking Iodine?

Thanks . I've researched alot, but never read anything likewhat you posted about the iodolipids. I continue to learn. Thanks fortaking the time to explain. For some people Dr. A & Dr. B are finding it increases organification. But for me it did not. We figure that is because I do not have a thyroid to "organify" anything in.

So, is that a good thing? Does "organification" mean the thyroid holds the iodine more?

Organification is the binding of iodine to an organic material. Yes it is a good thing to increase organification. This is from page 166 of the 3rd edition of Dr. Brownstein's Iodine book.

As discussed in Chapter 7, once iodine is formed, it undergoes organification and becomes part of cholesterol, lipids (fats) and proteins (Figure 2). Organification simply means being bound to an organic molecule. As can be seen from Figure 2, iodine in RDA amounts (~150µg/day) can be bound to thyroglobulin and make thyroid hormones—T1, T2, T3, and T4. . However, it takes larger doses of iodine to produce the important iodo-lipids such as δ-iodolactone.

At 100x the RDA, iodine can be organified to lipids to form δ-iodolactone and other iodo-lipids. δ-iodolactone, as well as the other iodo-lipids will not be formed in any appreciable amounts when iodine is taken in RDA amounts. Simply put, RDA amounts of iodine barely give the cell enough iodine to make thyroid hormone.

Very interesting--thank you. That may explain why my Rx for Synthroid went from .112mg to .088mg. I'd been taking Tyrosine (before I found this group and found out about Iodine). I think I'll start taking the Tyrosine again.

(A word of caution: in some people, tyrosine can increase the blood pressure..)

BTW, the past two days, I increased my Iodine to 80mg--100mg/day, and I feel real good on the higher amount of Iodine. I use the Lugol's 2% drops so am not taking precise exact amounts.
