Guest guest
I have used Povidine (Betadine) iodine on the boils on my skin and finished the boils in about seven days. They were five boils. I dropped three drops of Povidine directly on the mouth of the boils and left it there for a minute before scrubing it with cotton.------------Ratan Singh, Phone: 91 141 2652561, mail: ratanpsych@...- Certificate in Food & Nutrition; Diploma in Nutrition and Health Education.- Author of "Nutrition & Supplements in Major Mental Illnesses";- M.A. (Psychol), Postgraduate Diploma in Medical & Social Psychology, Ph.D.;- Certified Behavior Therapist (from late Prof. J. (transdermal)iodine Date: Thursday, December 18, 2008, 2:46 PM Have any of you tried to supplement iodine solely through the skin? I have successfully used transdermal magnesium using Epsom Salts for afew months now, and was thinking, that transdermal application ofiodine may be similarly effective. Are there any studies showing the absorption and bioavailability ofthe various iodine compounds through the skin? One reason I'm considering the transdermal route is, because the oralforms of iodine are very difficult to find in the Philippines andwould be a hassle to get through customs, if mailed from the US.The only oral iodine products I can find here are Kelp with only225mcg/tablet and Jodid tablets with 100 micrograms (not milligrams)of potassium iodide. For external application I can getPovidone-Iodine (Betadine). The manufacturer of Betadine listsPovidone-iodine 10% (1% available iodine), which according to othersources is equivalent to 2 mg of iodine per drop of Povidone-iodine.If I would use Povidone-Iodine on the skin, how many drops would Ineed to apply to get the same dose of iodine into the body as a 50 mgIodoral tablet (considering transdermal absorption and bioavailability) ? Guest guest
-Dear Group, I too have been painting with Povidine-Iodine for about a year now, and am wondering how to get the dose to match the 50 mg of Ioderal. I do sleep better on nights that I paint on the the 3-4 inch square of iodine on my stomach area. Does anyone have advice for us? Guest guest
I found two older posts which give a little bit more insight into this question: " Re: Transdermal absorption of iodine -- Gottardi " iodine/message/2518 Re: Re: Patch test iodine/message/6966 Gottardi states, that " povidone-iodine preparations which have substantially ***lower*** free iodine concentrations (2-10 ppm) than Lugol’s solution (approximately 170 ppm). Nevertheless, since povidone-iodine preparations can also cause an increase of serum-iodide, iodine from these compounds must be absorbed by the skin. " The book is online at: http://iodine4health.com/research/gottardi_1995_uptake_and_release_of_iodine_by_\ skin.pdf From the above it seems that much less Iodine is absorbed from povidone-iodine preparations than from Lugol’s solution. Gottardi never gets into how much is absorbed systemically into the blodddstream. So this still does not answer our question, but it seems it would be a better idea to paint with Lugol's, if we want more to be absorbed into the body. I believe tincture of iodine 2% or 7% may also be better absorbed into the body than povidone-iodine, as it would be somewhat similar to Lugol's. It would be important to know, whether for example 50% of the iodine is absorbed from the skin into the bloodstraem or maybe only 5%. Has anyone found any absorption studies regarding these iodine preparations which could make this a bit clearer?
