Yeah, if I had a choice between drinking a little tincture or risking cholera, I'd go for the tincture any day! Boiling is a better bet though, if you have fuel. Guest guest
Lugol's can be used externally to sterilize water, to kill bacteria on our skin (on boils, cuts). Lugol's can also be used internally as, say, three drops in a glass of water to gargle, clean the jammed nose, drink. Now, pardon my ignorance, can povidone iodine be used for all these above uses? How about the dose, again "three drops in a glass of water"? Yes povidone iodine doesn't sting as much as Lugol's does. We have it in chemist shops here in India under the brand name Betadine. Guest guest
Povidone might be able to be ingested, but the main reason I like it is that it's a whole lot cheaper than Lugols', which is water-based. I mean, if you are going to slather something on your arms after fighting with a blackberry bush, cheap is good. Povidone is a blood-plasma substitute, and as such, one would think it is pretty non-toxic. Povidone iodine is considered toxic in large doses, but that is because of the iodine: http://www.safety.vanderbilt.edu/pdf/hcs_msds/betadine_pvp_solution_10_03.pdf Subchronic Toxicity Povidone iodine In a 12-week dietary study in rats, ingestion of povidone iodine at an average povidone iodine dosage of approximately 75 to 750 mg/kg/day produced a dose-dependent increase in serum protein-bound iodine and nonspecific, reversible microscopic changes in the thyroid. No other gross or microscopic povidone iodine-induced changes were observed. At equivalent iodine dosages, dietary potassium iodide produced similar thyroid changes of equal or greater severity. The main thing though, is that in the U.S., items meant for " medical " uses are WAY overpriced. Actually anything meant for human ingestion is way overpriced too. I can get silicon hair gel that is meant for horse tails at a few dollars for a big bottle, while " human " silicon gel is $15 for a tiny bottle. I can get 20 lbs of flax seeds or 5 gallons of molasses for a few dollars. But if I buy the same thing in the store, the markup is huge. So while I personally would NOT ingest povidone iodine (excepting some major emergency), it is great for cuts and scrapes and " painting " . I mean, if Lugol's is $10 an ounce, and I can get a pint of Betadine for the same price, I'll use the Betadine! (actually the animal version isn't called Betadine, I forget the name). But it's not an either/or issue. The more tools in one's toolkit, the better. Guest guest
May I ask, Duke, is the tumor on the thyroid, or elsewhere? Is this just valid for thyroid tumors or is it helpful for all tumors? What made you decide to do this? (thought process/research/knowledge process) Thanks in advance for your reply. Esther N.
