Guest guest
did you do the spot test too? Prior to supplementing? I had decent saturation BUT my spot test showed severe deficiency. I should have absorbed much of the iodoral tablets BUT instead peed out 2/3's. This indicates NIS defect. So I need to take more iodine to bombard my body to get it in the cells. I wonder if you have NIS defect too? I hope I didn't confuse you more...I am new at this. Steph can probably explain this better OR help you with your results. > > I just received the results of my iodine loading test, and it was very > good.(84% saturation) I should be happy. I am not. Guest guest
Vicky, I understand what you are saying.. Have you done the saliva testing for your adrenals? It is good news that your body is taking in the iodine. So that must mean that you don't have a problem getting the iodine into your cells. It is also wonderful that your temp is up and you are not cold anymore. Now, to just fine tuning things. You are getting really close to doing everything right. I hope this helps. results of loading test I just received the results of my iodine loading test, and it was verygood.(84% saturation) I should be happy. I am not. I really thoughtthat I was probably hypothyroid due to low iodine and that was thereason for my great fatigue. Now I don't know what to think. I knowthat in one month of supplementing with iodoral, my temps have risen ahalf degree and I am not cold anymore. I do feel like something has"switched on" inside me. This winter I felt like I was dead inside andreally couldn't get any energy aroused to care. But I suppose that canbe placebo effect or something. I had not been diagnosed hypothyroidby my doctor, my TSH was all that was tested. Anyone have any encouragement? My theory on how I was going to getwell just got shot down, I guess, and I'm disappointed. Show me somelight, anyone. Thanks,Vicki
Guest guest
It is difficult to determine the true level of saturation w/o doing another loading test in 3 - 6 mos. Like someone said a spot test would have been a good " check " to this. My guess is that you have a symporter issue where you have been deficient so long that your NIS have shut down and you do not have the capability to pull iodine into the cells even if you need it. Steph results of loading test >I just received the results of my iodine loading test, and it was very > good.(84% saturation) I should be happy. I am not. Guest guest
Thank you ladies for the encouragement. I did do the spot test, but I don't know that my nurse understood the results to tell me. A copy of all of it is coming in the mail. I just felt so " down " when she said I was at 84% sat. because I really had hoped to find the " answer " . As I have been thinking and praying about it tonight, it occurred to me that my breasts have been so tender during 3 of the 4 weeks of supplementation. Detox? At my age, 53, that is something I haven't experienced in a few years. And I know I must be detoxing some because of the symptoms on the bromide detox list. Particularly the achy hips and legs, headache, and acne. So, I guess I haven't wasted my time and money on pursuing iodine. My doctor may tell me that I have, but with my temps up closer to normal, etc. probably not. The only check for my adrenals that I have done is the standard blood work (traditional allopathic) that the dr. says is fine, and I did the temp taking 3 times a day, 3 hours apart, for 5 days and averaged each day. I think that is a protocol by Dr. Rimes? Anyway, my average temps were within .1 degree each day, and that is supposed to indicate that your adrenal glands are functioning properly, if I understood it okay. Thanks for boosting me tonight, I really needed it. You gals are the best! Blessings- Vicki I'll post when I get the paperwork on the spot test, etc. and you all can help me figure out what it means. Maybe I do have a NIS transporter issue? I will have to read more about that to see if I fit that description. I know that my serum sodium level was okay according to the dr. but in the book Dr. B wrote on salt, I was still considered low at 139. So I am not limiting my salt intake, Redmond's. Guest guest
It is very rare to see anyone in the saturation level right off the bat. I would be willing to bet that precious few truly are. If your breasts are sore then I would bet hormonally you are shifting things around as well as detoxing. I would keep it going and wait for the test results and post here. Glad we could encourage you. Steph re: results of loading test > Thank you ladies for the encouragement. I did do the spot test, but I > don't know that my nurse understood the results to tell me. Guest guest
I found out I had the NIS defect because after my 2nd loading test, my saturation level went down. I was VERY confused until Dr. Flechas explained to me what was going on! Fortunately I did have the spot test done too. It seems like a lot of people might get false impressions of their iodine levels from the first loading test. I've been on Iodoral since Dec 07 and I still don't feel any improvements but I'm committed to get my iodine levels to go up and hopefully once that happens I'll start feeling better!! Good luck! Guest guest
It will be good to get the results of the test in the mail. I too wonder if it is NIS defect. I believe you are doing a good job figuring out what you need. It takes time to get it all in place. I did the thyroid and adrenals first and then looked into iodine. Maybe not the best order but hey I am getting there. This group is really helpful!! You will get there! > > Thank you ladies for the encouragement. Guest guest
The reason it goes down is that the pumps in the first test are now working so that they don't pull in the iodine. So you pee out more. But as you supplement more with iodine it " wakes " them up and then they are able to take in more iodine on the next loading test so that you are peeing out less. Does that make sense? Steph Re: results of loading test >I found out I had the NIS defect because after my 2nd loading test, my >saturation level > went down. Guest guest
WOW! Steph, that hit me like a light bulb going on :-) So it takes awhile sometimes for the iodine to start being used where it needs to be, yes? > >> > > >> > I just received the results of my iodine loading test, and it was > >> very > >> > good.(84% saturation) I should be happy. Guest guest
Yes that's it. Because the body shuts down what it doesn't need. So when you are low in iodine you need less symporters. Let's give an example. A cell has 50 iodine pumps on it. But the amount of iodine passing by in the blood will only fill 25 of the pumps. So the body puts 25 of them to sleep. But when more iodine is passing by the pumps the body senses that there is more iodine it wakes up more of the pumps so it can capture the increase in iodine passing by. So you would naturally use more. Re: results of loading test > WOW! Guest guest
- I agree, it was a great explanation! I have done some more research tonight, because my daily average temp is around 98.0. It appears that 's Temperature Syndrome is also a possiblity. I don't want to clog up the iodine list, but if someone has this would you want to email me privately? There are just so many things to look at when you are trying to be your own doctor! I am so glad for all of you on this list who are so helpful and so knowledgeable! Guest guest
Hi Vicki: I read your posts and you said you had your TSH tested. Would you mind posting your numbers? Also many of us with Hashi's or Hypothyroid get their Free T3 and Free T4 tested also. Just a thought, when my doctor's office calls me and says my tests came back "normal" or "within range", I always ask them the specific number bc what is "normal" to my PCP may not seem that way to me bc all of the symptoms I am showing. That is why I found an holistic doctor who treats by my syptoms and not just my numbers. Guest guest
My TSH was 1.97 a month ago before I started on the Iodoral. My family dr. won't test T4 or T3 because " it isn't necessary " . I know you know where I'm coming from on that. And I do understand that he is just following standardized protocol. And because my diagnosis is fibro/chronic fatigue syndrome, I " obviously " don't have a low thyroid. That's not the diagnosis. The iodine testing and supplementation was my idea from all the research I have done on the internet, which didn't set very well with him either. Anyway, he was willing to request the iodine/iodide loading test so insurance would help pay for it, and I am grateful for that. I am just befuddled that the loading test could come back at 84 % sufficient. 's explanation makes lots of sense though. I've been on a reduced sodium diet for 35 years, and used non-iodized salt for the last 20 years. Since I've only started eating seafood, maybe twice a week, for the last four months, I just can't imagine having sufficient iodine in my body. I was addicted to Mountain Dew since my teen years and only stopped drinking it four months ago. I haven't found a holistic dr. in our area yet. Guest guest
Well you didn't give me all that information! You were on a low salt diet. I am betting that your NIS are shut down because they are comprised of sodium (N - sodium, I- Iodine, S- Symporter). You only stopped Mt Dew 4 mos ago? If you are deficient the body looks for iodine but if it can't find it, it replaces it with bromide and that plugs the receptors. So you need to take higher doses (over 25 mgs ) of iodine to help push that bromide out of your body. Now I am convinced you do not have enough iodine in your body. I would be willing to bet that your next loading test shows a drop in levels. Re: results of loading test > My TSH was 1.97 a month ago before I started on the Iodoral. Guest guest
You're right, I didn't give you enough " history " . As I have thought and thought about this all night, I do believe and agree that the high sufficiency result of the loading test is actually going to be diagnosising the NIS problem. I increased my Iodoral to 50 mg today, and my vit. C to 4000 mg. Should I be salt loading too? in some way. (I do use Redmond's Real Salt on my food freely, and then " load " when I am feeling detox symptoms.) When I first posted yesterday, I was just so overwhelmed with the idea of how could I NOT be deficient in iodine? (knowing my history) and then the idea of " if iodine is not part of my problem then what? " . I can't thank all of you enough for bolstering me while the dust settled and encouraging me to think past the results to what else they could mean. I hope tomorrow I will receive the paperwork and can see the results of the spot test. I will post that when I receive it and will be interested to hear your comments. Thanks so much again. Bless all of you, especially !!!!, for helping those of us who are just starting out! Guest guest
Dr. Brownstein has me doing 1/2 - 3/4 tsp of Celtic Salt (Redmond's is fine too) per day. I put it in OJ becuase it is easier for me to take that way. I also use it through the day. You only need to salt load if you are having detoxing symptoms like runny nose, headaches, acne, aching joints......, etc. Re: results of loading test > You're right, I didn't give you enough " history " . > > As I have thought and thought about this all night, I do believe and > agree that the high sufficiency result of the loading test is actually > going to be diagnosising the NIS problem. Guest guest
Vicki, I look forward to hearing your results. It sure sounds like NIS defect. I am learning so much from , this group and other reading I am doing...It is great when you figure out what you need. Hang in there! > > >> > >> >> >> > > > >> > >> >> >> > I just received the results of my iodine loading test, > > > and it > > >> > >> > was > > >> > >> >> >> very > > >> > >> >> >> > good.(84% saturation) I should be happy. Guest guest
Yes, I thank you too, Steph! One more question - must we do a loading test at all? If yes, why is that? I thought the premise is that we are all deficient to begin with! Angel 2g. Re: results of loading test Posted by: "janiebeau" JanieBea@... janiebeau Tue Jul 8, 2008 6:04 pm (PDT) Thank you Steph, I like when you explain things so my simple mind can understand. Sometimes I need it spelled out VERY simple :-) That helped me understand it perfectly!!!!!!!!!
Guest guest
Drum roll, please...... Well, this is puzzling! My iodide spot test shows no iodine deficiency. The result was .34mg/L Any thoughts on this? This is getting more crazy by the day! But I am still smiling today and still figuring I am on the right track. I am definitely in bromide detox today, the second day of 50mg Iodoral. So I am doing salt loading. Funny, isn't it, to feel lousy, but have that be the reason you are happy? Looking forward to your comments, Blessings- vicki > > >> > >> >> >> > > > >> > >> >> >> > I just received the results of my iodine loading test, > > > and it > > >> > >> > was > > >> > >> >> >> very > > >> > >> >> >> > good.(84% saturation) I should be happy. Guest guest
Hi Vicki, That is strange! I am wondering if you abstained from all iodine for 48 hrs prior to doing the spot test and loading test? I'm not sure why we are supposed to do that but those are the directions... and perhaps if one doesn't abstain before the test it gives a false high reading ... But other than that I don't know! -Marlena > > > >> > >> >> >> > > > > >> > >> >> >> > I just received the results of my iodine loading test, > > > > and it > > > >> > >> > was > > > >> > >> >> >> very > > > >> > >> >> >> > good.(84% saturation) I should be happy. Guest guest
Thanks, Marlena. I wonder where I messed up too!
