Does anybody know who the manufacturers are of desiccated

thyroid and how they could be contacted? I don't mean the manufacturers of

Armour - just the desiccated thyroid glands.

Hi Sheila

I've had a really good search but can't find anything (there's nothing

on the TV!) Wouldn't the Armour manufacturers themselves be able to

point you in the right direction?

Sorry Val - I should have made myself much clearer. I meant where

do these companies who make Armour thyroid and all the generics actually get

their raw material from. Chuck mentioned them all getting it from the same meat

company but not who the meat company was. I too heard desiccated thyroid is

sourced from the same manufacturer. It is very difficult to find this out, and

even Afshin (who I asked) just told me everybody gets it from the same source.

Who is the source?

Luv - Sheila

I replied to this yesterday but it did not seem to gt thru. Will do

the same again so hope the original does not arrive as well (outlook

exp was playing up)

Nutri Meds porcine thyroid has all the hormones.

They take the thyroid gland flash freeze it and

grind it into powder they don't add anything or

take anything out, at at least that's what the

company's owner says. The OTC glandulars just

aren't concentrated and standardized like the

prescription NDT. And some of them take out the

T4 some way or other. But for an OTC product, the

Nutri Meds thyroid product does a pretty good job.

Although for some people supplementing with Iodine

seems to take up the slack very well.

Yeah Bonnie, just go to the Nutri Meds website,

put it in your cart and pay. They're fairly fast

shippers, and I didn't have any problems with my

order at all. The lady that owns the company has

thyroid/adrenal problems and that's why she

started the company because of people not being

able to get the right Dx from their Doc and get

prescription meds. A lot of people swear by Nutri

Meds products.

Dr Lowe recommends a thyroid supplement sold by

RLC labs, I believe, the same guys that make

naturethroid/westhroid, that isn't the

prescription type, there's also Iodine supplement

(which I haven't investigated yet) and adrenal

support stuff.

I used Nutri Meds brand and Source Naturals Raw

Thyroid before I got my prescription for NDT. Just

remember I don't care what anyone says, they just

aren't as strong as the prescription thyroid meds.

Well they weren't to me anyway. Just remember to

start out with a small dose and adjust up slowly

so you have time to know how well it's working

rather than starting out with the max dose and

getting weird sensations that will scare you:) I

know we're all desperate to feel better, and we'll

do just about anything to get there, but taking

too much is as bad as taking too little:)

Source Naturals has other stuff in it, like a bit

of adrenal support and Iodine, and it is a bit

cheaper. A couple of sellers on Amazon have it for

a reasonable price. Both of these products worked

for me, even if they weren't as strong as Armour,

Naturethroid/westhroid, or Erfa.

I took 2 in the morning. Buutttt, we're all

different, and we all respond to things

differently, so I'd recommend a little

experimenting to see what works for you

specifically. I was also taking the adrenal cortex

plus, one in the morning and one at noon to

support the adrenals. Another note, most people

seem to do better if they take their thyroid meds

in the evening(I didn't know that then) before bed.

All this was before I got an official Dx and a

prescription for Armour, and found out about

Iodine and started taking the Lugol's, then I

found the Iodine protocol :). I spent a loootttt

of time reading and researching all this stuff. :)

I still do:)

Yep, sorry about that. It is Natural Sources.

*Grimace* I have so many different supplements and

have tried so many different ones that I get the

manufacturer's names mixed up sometimes:) That's

the one. I've heard good things about the one that

Dr Low recommends although I haven't tried it as I

didn't learn about it until recently.

Thanks Bethann. I've consumed two bottles of nutri-meds this year and I

quickly worked up to 5 per day. I still felt like every step was knee

deep in molasses. One day I took 6, and I perked right along, but that

Bethann, when you say you heard most people do better taking their thyroid meds

in the evening, do you mean the RX drugs? Or the Armour kind?

I just recently started back on Levothyroxine, but at only 50 mcg, for now,

which is a very low dose.

But my recent TSH was 15.86, and I've been having some really majorly weird

symptoms, that are definitely thyroid-related. I've been having trouble with

cold feet--classic symptom. But since January, I get really tired in the

afternoon, like majorly exhausted, sometimes. And I have been getting really

panicky and weepy in the afternoons. And I feel better after I go ahead and

cry, to get it out of my system.

But I've also been having trouble eating all my food. I get full and bloated

from eating just a little, sometimes. It doesn't happen, usually, with dinner,

but sure does with lunch, in the afternoon. Then I'll have trouble figuring out

when I'm hungry again.

And I'm 51, now, so I've been trying to research menopause, to see if that's

part of the problem. But my doctor ran an estrogen test, at my request, and

says my estrogen level is " normal, " so I'm not in menopause, yet. Well, I think

it's at least " perimenopause. "

And all the worst of my weird symptoms seem to happen after my period.

So I'm wondering if I should maybe take the Levo at night, instead of morning,

like the pharmacist said?

And what about the OTC thyroid you mentioned. I've seen a bottle of thyroid

support stuff at Whole Foods, and I think it was Source Naturals.

Do you think I could maybe take that stuff along with the Levo?

I'm just eager to get past all this weirdness, and get back to feeling " normal, "

again.

I used to be on a much higher dose of Levo, last year, 15mg, but stopped it when

I started having a lot of trouble with " heart flutters, " which I read is a

symptom of too much thyroid hormone.

But, yes, I did this, without consulting the doctor, first. I hadn't been to

see him for months, but recently started going back to him, when I started

having all these weird symptoms going on since January.

And I'm wondering if a little iodine would help? I get a little in my sea salt,

and my multivitamin, but I know it's not much.

So what do you think? It seems you know an awful lot about all this. I'd

rather take the dessicated thyroid than the Levo. But, for now, I'm hoping it

will help. But I am concerned it's too LOW of a dose. That's fine to start

back up with, but I would want to increase it as soon as I can. I do have a

message in to my doc to ask about that.

So, sorry this ran so long, but I had a lot to ask about. I look forward to

your answers, or anyone else's, who has some recommendations.

Thanks again Bethann. I think I'll give it a try. There's some adrenal

gland in there also, and I'm getting suspicious of my adrenals being

fatigued.

>>Thanks Bethann. I've consumed two bottles of nutri-meds this year and I

>>quickly worked up to 5 per day. I still felt like every step was knee

>>deep in molasses. One day I took 6, and I perked right along, but that

>>night was acid reflux deluxe.

>>

>>Also, you mentioned Source Naturals. Any chance you got the words

>>reversed? I noticed Raw Thyroid by Natural Sources at the vitamin

>>shoppe. Even though I've tried about 5 or 6 otc thyroid supplements

>>that didn't help, I find myself willing to try one more. I reckon I'm

>>more likely to find help from something otc than trying to find an

>>iodine literate doctor in these parts.

It's a complicated thing for pre, mid. and post

menopause women because of all the hormone

fluctuations. I recently started taking DIM(It

blocks the bad estrogen metabolites) and using a

progesterone cream and I feel much better. The

fluctuation in hormones is due to the adrenal

glands and the ovaries and their hormone

production. The ovaries gradually stop producing

estrogen and the adrenal glands take over, but

they don't produce nearly as much as the ovaries

do/did. This could stress your adrenal glands, and

may be the reason for the weepy strange feelings

you've been experiencing, as well as the bloat.

However if you already have too much estrogen in

the body, or even a normal amount, which many US

women do, then perhaps a natural progesterone

cream may help. And perhaps some adrenal support.

Too low Progesterone levels can cause weight gain,

water retention, and sway the adrenals to a more

out of balance state. I however am not an expert.

These are simple things you can get without a

prescription and try to see if they will help. I

bought my Progesterone cream on Amazon.com,

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00142C2SG/ref=oss_product

and it has helped a lot. I have not had a period

in six months. I'm either at the end of menopause

or close to it. I however did not have problems

with hot flashes, night sweats, or the rest of the

symptoms because I have an overload of estrogen,

and I know it just from the lack of those

symptoms. The progesterone cream helps to balance

that out. Progesterone production drops like a

rock for a lot of women in their late twenties and

early thirties. So adding a little Progesterone

may help.

Panicky feelings, and cold feet, water retention

can be caused by not enough progesterone or

adrenal stress, or even the need for a higher

dosage of thyroid hormones. But any of those can

be because of a imbalance in the others. Like I

said balancing hormones for women is a tricky thing.

I'm not a great fan of synthetic thyroid hormones,

but if they're working for you then it's all good.

I started with Armour and switched to Erfa during

the shortage. And I have done very well with the

NDT. If your TSH is raised it may be that you need

an adjustment in your dose, but you'll have to

speak to your doctor for prescription changes. If

you want to try an OTC glandular that perks up

your levels a bit Nutri Meds may be a good choice

for you, or another of your choice.

If your estrogen is normal then Progesterone may

be the ticket. But let me tell you that you may

feel really good at first, then you may experience

a worsening of symptoms, this fairly common, so the

recommendation is that if that happens, reduce

your dose but don't stop taking it entirely. After

two weeks things improve rather markedly:)

Generally for menopausal and post menopausal women

that they use it 21 days with 7 days off but some

people use it all month long.

Some people find that DHEA helps, but DHEA feeds

estrogen and testosterone. So pregnenolone may be

the better choice, as the body can convert it to

whichever hormone you need, even progesterone. The

only thing I can say is try them out, not all at

one time, but one at a time, and see which ones

work the best. It's always good if you have the

lab levels to look at though, so you have an idea

where to start.

You may benefit from adrenal support, but I only

know what I have done, You may find more

information over at the adrenal support

group. I have never taken Isocort or

Hydrocortisone, so I cannot give you any

recommendations about that.

Iodine can certainly help, but you'd have to begin

with taking the the support nutrients for a while

first, I think, since you're hormones are in such

a flux. The support nutrients feed the adrenals,

and the thyroid, and Iodine gives both of them a

bit of a nudge. So I'd recommend building your

adrenals with the nutrients and salt for a while

first and then start slowly with the Iodine.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, I'm not a doctor,

and things that work for me may work differently

for other people. And a lot of what I've found

works for me has been from reading and pure trial

and error.

Balancing all the hormones for women is always tricky.
