melatonin lowering hypertension and rpid pulse

I had a pleasant surprise recently in that I forgot to take my

betablocker (Atenolol) which I had been prescribed for hypotension and

rapid pulse. I usually take it first thing and I missed that whole day

and the next with remembering and the surprise was then when I DID

remember I did not have a fast pulse as would usually happen.

I checked my BP and that had normalised too.

So I waited a few days to make sure it was really out of my system

(short-half life though) and my BP and pulse are still normal, for the

first time for years.

I was puzzled.

Then, yesterday, when I was trying to find some clues as to why my

oestrogen came in so high in the receet test, I had a read of my new

book The Hormone Solution (as recommended on this list btw so big

thanks for that) and whaddya know if Young Thierry wasn't saying in

there that melatonin lowers BP and fast pulse.

Hey ho, wonderful eh?

So Mo, what happens if you have adrenal fatigue & low BP. Does that

mean you shouldnt take melatonin? I've just ordered some for the

insomnia which is plaguing me.

Does Young Thierry have an opinion? :)

Molly Ban (as Gaeilge) :)

Well Young Thierry says it works for hypertension and so I would

think you would be OK in that it is unlikely you in your situation of

already low BP.

It worked for a little while for me for insomnia and now I am taking

GABA and Valerian and last two nights I slept well.

as Gaeilge indeed! I've been outed :) I'm from Tipperary originally,

married an English man and we moved over here. I noticed the

MairinAine and figured you were a countrywoman!

Thanks for the reply and for the herbal insomnia tips; I'll keep those

in mind. I've used melatonin in the past, some yeas ago now and didnt

really find it that good, so I'll probably add those too.

Indeed you have Molly Ban! Though your sense of humour kind of gave the

game away just a smidgeon......... :)

I am a Dubliner and I was christened " Maureen " and came to excel with

pride at my Irishness and changed that to the Gaelic Mairin who the

Sashnachs (sp?) could not pronounce so Mo seemed the simpler option!

Mo

ps keep the faith!

Hi Janie Baby! :)

Well I started on 1 mg a couple of years ago and that did nothing.

So recently I ordered 3 mg capsules and they worked for a week or two

in terms of helping sleep amd then improvement tailed off.

All this time I was taking Atenolol.

So sometimes, maybe twice or three times a week I increased the dose to

3 mg x 2. A couple of months in all taking melatonin.

Blondie is still trying to optimise his thyroid hormones, thank you for

asking..... He is coming up against precisely the same problems that

many 'uman thyroid patients do i.e. an over-reliance on blood labs

while hypot symptoms run riot.

And you too..... Byrnes was my favourite watering hole when I lived up

that way....

Yes some energy would be nice for sure.

hi mo; i thought i had read something about this before and sure

enough in dr. p's book , the section on melatonin he says just what you

did, it can reduce bp & pulse. i already take melatonin to help me

sleep, ~ i am a raging insomniac ~ and it does help. i recently

switched to taking armour at night and just this last week have been

waking up at 2 am and not been able to get back to sleep. i may have

to readjust when i take the armour again. hope blondie is soon

Really Jane? Wow.

I loaned out my copy of his book the summer before last and never saw

it again. No-one on this list I hasten to add.

Does he say anything about how much lowers BP, anything like that? Or

anything about its effect on oestrogen/progesterone?

You see it says on Genova's website that melatonin has an effect on

the result of the sex hormones saliva test and, as mine were sky

high, I am assuming that the melatonin raises levels.

But this may not be the case...

I hope to hear from Genova with some information on this and will

post what they say. I am a little dubious about advice from labs as

NP Tech/Lab 21 have been known to give wrong advice.

I am self-treating The Mutt now as the vet wants to keep him under-

dosed and have am having some success. Shouldn't be like this but

then the 'uman docs are the same so I should not be too surprised. A

bit more hair-raising self-treating an animal than self-treating

oneself "

Mo

ps. I am taking GABA and Valerian for sleep at the moment and it is

working a treat.

Maybe this is the explanation of my reduction in pulse rate recently,

having been taking 3 mg melatonin at bed time -- down to as low as 45

resting. No discernible change in BP though.

Goodness that is a very slow pulse Hans. What was it before the

melatonin and is your BP on the high side?

hi mo.. sorry for the delay, dogs and college takes lots of time,

page 104 of dr. p's book " ....Melatonin has a preventative effect.

This is partly perhaps mediated by the thyroid gland,, since as I have

said, low thyroid output is a major cause of high cholesterol, more

than bad eating. With this mechanism, and a second, working through

the kidneys, melatonin will reduce blood pressure and lesen the risk of

heart attacks and strokes. " i shall order some more immediately !
