Guest guest
Hello Arlene - apparently adrenal problems can cause skin discolouration, but so can haemachromatosis. I dont know if you have told us how old you are but I thought 'age spots' were quite small. have you had your ferritin checked - haemachromatosis is another thing that can be forgotten by docs - symptoms are various or none, skin bronzing can be a sign as can, apparently, arthritis in the fingers can be a symptom/sign, Irish or other celtic ancestry is a greater risk. Its easily treated by blood letting! Just was wondering has anyone ever had large marks on their arms or anywhere else. I have had them for years, and I know that I did read somewhere that this was hormonal/hypothyroid. They are horrible marks and I cannot get rid of them, and as usual the doctor says it is age, but I have had them for the last 10 years or more...Thanks againArlene Internal Virus Database is out-of-date.Checked by AVG Free Edition. Guest guest
Hi Arlene I'm glad you brought this up. I too have had these marks on my arms only for about 10 years, and yes, I too hate them. I get extremely dry skin on arms and shins and have to use lots of exfoliates to keep my skin smooth and slather on lots of moisturiser ( I use E45). I use self tanning cream and that helps hide the blemishes but I do not look forward to winter when they really show up. This happens to some people who have a thyroid problem I have read. The things we have to put up with. I am not sure whether it is possible to get rid of them or not, but I wish I knew the secret. Anyway, just to let you know, you are not the only one. Come and join the club. Luv - Sheila Just was wondering has anyone ever had large marks on their arms or anywhere else. Guest guest
That is very interesting Gill, I am 52, and have had a early menopause at 41, still have the hot flushes every hour..... How do I go about getting my ferritin levels checked.... I see Sheila has the same problem, it is so ugly, I hide my arms behind sleeves, as there are some very cruel people out there, and pass remarks on my dirty arms.... It gets me really down sometimes, so I too put on fake tan, but I just fail to understand why I have these marks. I understand that people get tan markings on their face when they are pregnant, so that is why I thought it was something to do with my hormones... Thanks again Arlene
Guest guest
Yes these are the marks I have, only over the years they have become larger... must show this to my doctor, and maybe I can get them removed by treatment by cream or something else.... but it does say about thyroid disease.... thank you Arlene
Guest guest
Hi Sheila, I think I have solved the problem. Look at the answers I got, and follow the link to the skinstore.... Mine marks are much bigger than this, as they must have joined together. Will investigate further...such a lot we have to put up with.... Guest guest
Hi Arlene, gill, discolouration on face and arms. I have very apparent marks on my cheeks and sides of my neck. I think these are adrenal in origin. I don't recall them being so bad before I reduced prednisolone dose. Have you considered using a progesterone cream such as Serenity to control your hot flushes. I found it very effective- progesterone also helps with the utilisation of thyroid hormones. > thyroid treatment > From: arlene.huggins@...> Date: Sun, 14 Sep 2008 12:49:00 +0000> Subject: Re: Query re brown marks- disclouring on skin on arms> > That is very interesting Gill, I am 52, and have had a early menopause > at 41, still have the hot flushes every hour..... Guest guest
Hello Arlene Its worth looking into it, though it could be something else of course. Here is one link but there are others - just do a search. Ferritin is the stored iron and is different to other iron so is a specific test. I would ask your GP to do this if they are amenable to requests - its not expensive for them or an unusual test. Have you had your iron levels checked as they would be unlikely to be low in haemachromatosis. But its worth considering all the options - unless you have symptoms that look suspiciously like this condition? Ive been looking into this recently after a raised ferritin level and though I dont have skin colour changes I do have some of the other symptoms including a long line of male (ish) ancestors who died young, so am following this up. I would say its probably unlikely but actually its the most common genetic condition apparently (in northern europe) and was probably a biological adaptation to store iron when iron was a scarce commodity! Guest guest
Arlene I have had discolouration on the top part of my feet and round my ankles and the back of my ankle. I too have had remarks made about not washing (overheard, not to my face). I have had this condition for the last 18 years. Every time I go to the doctors I have meant to mention it, but every time I forget. It cannot be too much iron because I have mild anaemia and low ferritin, although I am sure not for 18 years.
