Guest guest
Hi Dawn, I have loose skin under my eyes now and puffy every morning, along with my whole face, my eyelids are doing it also now.. I know this sounds daft, but when i smoke my face feels like its not so puffy and I keep trying to give up and when i dont smoke for a few hours my face starts getting puffy again I found this: Serum TSH Levels in Smokers and Non-Smokers. The 5th Tromsø Study R. Jorde1, J. Sundsfjord2 1 Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Tromsø, Tromsø, Norway 2 Department of Clinical Chemistry, University Hospital of North Norway, Tromsø, Norway Abstract Background: Cigarette smoking has a number of effects on the thyroid gland including the development of Graves' disease and thyroid multinodularity. However, the effect of smoking on thyroid function is more uncertain. Patients and methods: The present cross-sectional study included 6085 subjects (1744 smokers) without thyroxine medication and 441 subjects (92 smokers) with thyroxine medication that attended the 5th Tromsø study in 2001, and 460 subjects (114 smokers) that attended follow-up studies after the 5th Tromsø study. Serum TSH was measured in the 5th Tromsø study, and serum TSH, free T4, and free T3 in the follow-up studies. Comparisons between smokers and non-smokers were performed with a general linear model with age, BMI, (and gender) as covariables. Results: Serum TSH levels were significantly lower in the smokers than in the non-smokers, both in males (1.63 ± 0.88 vs. 1.95 ± 1.04 mIU/L [p < 0.01]), and in females (1.55 ± 0.86 vs. 1.86 ± 1.01 mIU/L [p < 0.01]). Serum free T4 and free T3 levels were significantly higher in smokers than non-smokers (14.0 ± 2.2 vs. 13.4 ± 2.4 pmol/L for free T4 [p < 0.05], and 3.89 ± 0.79 vs. 3.72 ± 0.67 pmol/L for free T3 [p < 0.01], males and females analyzed together). There was no association between number of cigarettes smoked and the serum TSH level. Conclusion: Smokers have lower serum TSH and higher free T4 and free T3 levels than non-smokers, which may be of importance when evaluating subjects with subclinical hypothyroidism. Key words Smoking - subclinical hypothyroidism - thyrotropine - triiodothyronine - thyroxine I think smoking makes me Hyper... xx
Guest guest
Yes Bob s, I wonder? I would have definately had a crisis if it hadn't been for my hc by now on Armour. I get awefully sickly and other nasty symptoms when I am running low to next dose. I am on 25mg hc now, so I would have hoped to see an improvement in my eyes Calcium, I do supplement, I also supplement with magnesium after you told me ages ago, wonderful mineral . Thanks for the smoking thing, I know hon, lol its strange, lots of folks who stopped smoking have ended up on forums like this one. I often used to get anxious when I was feeling fragile mentally when I smoked a fag, think my adrenals must have been having trouble handling the enhanced activity of my frees. I agree, if you are on optimum treatment when not smoking then smoking probably would make you hyper. An old reason for women smoking was that 'it speeds up your metabolism' they have known for years that anyone who stopped put on weight, hence lots of ladies used to go back on the ciggys. (I am old I remember the things prior to internet access to scientific research when they just knew and gossipped among themselves in the street and down the club lol). I know puffiness is a sign of hypo, I have that big time around my eyes but its these little buttons (for want of a better description) that are mysterious to me. Hope you lose the puffiness soon hon. God bless both of u Dawnx

Guest guest
Hi Dawn, Are the eye pouches slightly yellow looking, or white? Perhaps fatty deposits ~ is your gall bladder being 'difficult' about processing fatty acids? Do you have Helicobacter Pylori in either your stomach or located elsewhere (as one of the other variants of H.Pylori)? By the time everything else has gone wrong, your gall bladder might need tweaking up (apple juice etc) gall bladder flush? best wishes Bob > Hiya > Has anyone else got little 'pouches' on the inner upper eyelids? Guest guest
Hi Dawn, I have one of these little yellowish lumps on the inner left upper eyelid. My sister had these for a long time and eventually had them removed. She was told it was fatty deposits due to high cholesterol. I don't know if this is true - but mine arrived after I started to put on a lot of weight last year. Anybody else got any ideas? > > Has anyone else got little 'pouches' on the inner upper eyelids? Guest guest
Dawn I read on the adrenal site that smoking raises cortisol and thats why when people stop they feel so ill, I think Val said this, caffine also does the same and I am guessing its because they are both stimulants Yes Bob s, I wonder? Guest guest
hi I also have these white "lumps" in the sides of my nose by the corners of my eyes and also under them down towards the tops of my cheeks. I also have tthem just under the inner corner of my eyebrow. I heard it was fatty deposits from poor metabolism. I know others with hypothyroidism who have them too. Guest guest
Cheers ladies and Bob Wow Bob thats a cool book , luckily I don't have the s signs, so that is reassuring. My buttons, pouches, whatever are normal skin colour with shadow all around (pretty eh? lol) and a perfect matching pair. So I don't appear to be having the same as mentioned, with the white or yellowing. I do however remember my gran having these and she did have gallstones too, so there could be a connection there. I have quite a lot of aches over the liver area too. My gran had heart trouble and a pacemaker, but did not die till she was 86. LOL there is hope for me yet . Anyone else with wierd stuff around the eyes? All these strange things are quite interesting. It baffles me how many things we can get from this combination of ills. lotsa luv and God bless Dawnx
Guest guest
Hi Dawn, Not weird about the eyes now Dr S has put my T4 up to enough for me. I feel as if my eyes are wide open compared with before. (presumably not puffy anymore). Except this morning, I felt my eyes were suddenly droopy, my colleagues asked if I was OK so clearly I didn't look OK. They said I was flushed, and I felt odd in myself, almost dizzy. What could that have been to come on so quickly and be almost gone within 5 minutes - just a lingering not completely myself for a couple of hours after. (Just catching up on posts after being away for a while) Best wishes Kat > > Anyone else with wierd stuff around the eyes? All these strange things > are quite interesting. Guest guest
HI Kat If anybody can't cope with the amount of messages on this forum, please go to the Home Page thyroid treatment and at the top of the page, above the broad dark green bar, click on 'Edit Membership' and this will take you to a page where you can alter the way you receive messages. You can chose to have them delivered by 'Daily Digest' where you get up to 25 messages in one Email, or you can click to receive 'No Email' or you can choose to receive 'Special Notices' only. This forum is VERY busy and has a lot of traffic, so it can become quite over-whelming for some members who opted to receive 'Individual Emails' when they first registered. luv - Sheila Hi Dawn, I don't know if I have Hashi's - my only antibody test was low so no conclusion to be drawn there.
