Guest guest
I personally had no side affects from the Quinine. My neurologist would not prescribe it to me or my nephew (Also with CMT) any more. I think I remember him saying something about possible liver damage. I do agree it helped but since I stopped taking it over 10 years ago, I have had very very few cramps. I used to get leg cramps so bad I could not get a restful nights sleep. Guest guest
I used to get leg cramps at night before going to bed, or on long flights on airplanes. I found that drinking a bottle of Tonic Water when I had leg cramps worked for me. Obviously tonic water has quinine in it. I think that is why it worked so well. Guest guest
I've used the Hyland's Leg Cramps remedy off and on for quite a while. If I'm having " restless leg " kind of pain it helps a lot. Its interesting to note that many Rheumatologists will prescribe a version of Hydrocloroquine (an anti-malarial drug) for people with this kind of pain and certain rheumatic diseases...it in fact falls into the class of DMARD's or Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs. The prescriptive is some pretty heavy stuff. I took if many years ago while spending an extended amount of time in Centeral America during a malarial outbreak. I also note that the prescriptive quinine is somewhat toxic to the liver. The homeopathic is, however, quite safe to use on a nightly basis. It helps me with some of the myoclonus (tics and " nap jerks " )...just wish it worked all the time! The Hyland's remedy is easy to find at just about any healthfood store. I would highly recommend anyone give it a try. But remember, for homeopathic meds to be effective you need to take them after brushing and rinsing the mouth well- you want a clean mouth. Next, you should not touch the pills (many homeopaths believe that the interaction with your body oils or body temp can affect the potency of the remedy)... it is best to tip the bottle and tap the tablets into the cap without touching them and then toss them under the tongue, letting them disolve slowly. All homeopathics that are not in liquid form are best absorbed if they are taken sublingually. If you can stand the taste of Tonic water, it is an effective way to add some quinine to the diet and it really can help with certain types of cramping pain. Good luck!
