Two weeks ago, we wrote to alert you to a flawed policybeing considered in Congress - Association Health Plans, or AHPs for short. Today, I'd like to tell you more about AHP's and ask you to take action to protect your healthcare. Thank you for receiving Health Alerts from Care2 - act today: http://www.care2.com/go/z/18010We all know about the problems of rising health care costs- this issue has been a major topic of debate this election year. But AHPs are not the answer. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that AHPs would actually result in higher premiums for 80 percent of AHP participants. Not surprisingly, experts also predict that AHPs would result in even more uninsured Americans. There are currently 45 million uninsured Americans - that's about the number of people who live in California, Oregon, and Washington combined. We need healthcare that helps Americans, not healthcare that hurts:http://www.care2.com/go/z/18010Perhaps the most troubling aspect of the legislation Congress is considering is the lack of consumer protection. AHPs mean no protection, no guarantee and no limits on price. They will be exempt from health and consumer protection laws you have in your state. We need to do something about healthcare, but AHPs will make things worse.Care2 is part of a broad coalition organizing to submit letters to Congress opposing the Small Business Health Fairness Act of 2003, S. 545/H.R. 660 - legislation that would exempt AHPs from the consumer protections in your state.
