Guest guest
Yeah, but no one, in my state at least has " stepped up " to start even recycling collection center for fluorescent lights! I wonder, how much better ARE THEY really for the environment? Sure it saves on the energy bills, but dumping spent fluorescent bulbs even with minute amts of mercury can't be good for the environment either! Are there any states that have started recycling these bulbs? Guest guest
They will likely be replaced by LED's pretty soon. There has been an expense problem with the LED's, but someone recently figured out how to make them without sapphire. And they last a really long time! I just got a few to test them out. They can be made in any color. We did get some indoor florescents though that are very *very* bright, and also daylight-spectrum. We have a good recycling program in our state, so I don't worry about that part so much. Also because I've never had one burn out yet! Some of the burning out part might have to do with your energy to the house. When we used to burn out a whole lot of bulbs, it turned out to the be transformer on the street, which was also burning out our various electronics pretty quickly too. When the electric company replaced it, our light bulbs suddenly got a lot longer-lived. What I do worry about are batteries ... mercury batteries have a lot more mercury than the light bulbs, and people tend not to dispose of them correctly. Our state is very good on this, and has " household toxics " places where you can dispose of most anything. But watch batteries are actually worth some money, and probably you can give them to most jewelry stores and they will recycle them for you. Guest guest
Did anyone see the piece by Dr. Mercola on these lights? I went looking for the " full spectrum " light bulbs and even though he is really anti mercury, he says there will be less mercury used because of the lower energy than if all the bulbs (I think he quoted 290 million) were in a land fill (garbage wise). BTW his bulbs come from China, and they are not cheap. almost $10 per bulb for the full spectrum when you get 6. Polly

Guest guest
I purchased Mercola's bulbs over 5 years ago, maybe longer, whenever he was first selling them, mine were $19 each back then, they may be lower now. They are all still bright and burning, I have them for my whole house and have not replaced a single one. I have never had a problem. I have never dropped a bulb in all my life and I don't plan to, mercury or not, I handle all bulbs with extreme care. Mercola's bulbs are supposed to last for a decade or more I think. Whatever it is they are going strong even with wire problems in my home. I have had electricians in 3 times over the last few years but the problem was never with the bulbs, just the wiring. I could be wrong and be snowed by Dr. M but my sense is that his are different from those I see in the stores for real cheap. They are not as light and thin as the ones I see in the store for a few dollars, there is a big difference, no comparison. The full spectrum part I can't attest to, I don't 'feel' better mentally with them but the quality is apparent if you have been exposed to both. radianttara
