Thyroid in films and books

For a very common condition, there don't seem to be many references to

thyroid problems in popular culture.

I've only ever come across one example and that was in Alan 's

graphic novel about Jack the Ripper " From Hell " . In that an

unscrupulous royal doctor removes a woman's thyroid and destroys her -

it is a key strand of the story development too! Interestingly, when

the book was turned into a film the story was altered so that the

woman's health was destroyed by brain surgery.

I wonder why Alan chose the thyroid story in the first place and

also why it was altered for the film?

Has anyone else found books or films where one of the characters has a

thyroid problem?
