New Study Links Supplement Usage with Reduced Health Care Costs, Improved HealthMake Sure Your Legislators and Local Media Hear the Good News

You may have already heard about a new study just released that links dietary supplements with improved health and reduce health care costs by the billions of dollars. Too often, however, the consumer news media sends a negative message or minimizes the good news about the benefits of dietary supplements. Be assured that we’re doing all we can to make sure that the good news about this study gets across to media, lawmakers and consumers. Now we need your help to make sure that your legislators and local media know how important this study is to constituents and consumers like you. The landmark study was released September 22, 2004 at a congressional hearing regarding the cost savings and health benefits of five selected dietary supplements: calcium, folic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine and saw palmetto. The study, commissioned by the Dietary Supplement Education Alliance (DSEA) and conducted by The Lewin Group, found that the five selected dietary supplements have the ability to positively affect health status and could have a significant impact on health care costs. The study included a systematic literature review of the most rigorous research available. Key Study Findings Send a free e-mail to your legislators and local media telling them how supplements can help reduce costly health care expenses all while improving health. Write them today! As your constituent, I want to call your attention to a new study that links dietary supplements to improved health and health care savings. I wanted to make sure you were aware of this study because too often the consumer news media sends a negative message or minimizes the good news about the benefits of dietary supplements.

The study, which was conducted by the Lewin Group, shows that daily use of calcium would prevent 734,000 hip fractures and save $13.9 billion in health care costs over the next five years. Daily use of folic acid by women would prevent 600 cases of neural tube birth defects yearly, saving $1.3 billion in lifetime medical costs over five years. That's a total savings of over $15 billion dollars if these simple healthy tips can be implemented. You can read more about these supplements, and the other three that were studied – omega-3 fatty acids, Glucosamine and saw palmetto – at www.supplementinfo.org.

There’s a health care crisis in this country today that dietary supplements can help to solve. I urge you not to support legislation that would limit access to and information about these products. Instead, please support bills that will help to fully implement a good law, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, and ensure there are enough research dollars available to further study these safe, affordable and effective products.
