Hi

For some people, it is fine just to stop your L-thyroxine one day and start Armour the next and I too did just that, with no adverse effects whatsoever. For some people, not stopping cold cause a build up of thyroid hormone which might not all get absorbed and could cause toxicity, so that is the best advice to give.

You should not be increasing your Armour by half a grain weekly. After starting with half a grain, it is recommended you stay on that for 7 days and then increase by half a grain, and then stay on that dose for 3 to 4 weeks before increasing by another half grain again. You keep increasing every 3 to 4 weeks after that by another half grain until you reach the point where you actually do feel over-medicated. You will be able to tell this because no doubt you will get palpitations, feel sweaty and/or dizzy and generally feel spaced out. At that point, take no more Armour that day and the following day (or night) take the dose you were on before your last increase. That will be the dose your body requires and there should be no need after that to tweak your dosage whatsoever. You should realise that thyroxine has a long half life and it can take up to 6 weeks for it to be properly absorbed and you could get adverse toxic effects by increasing your Armour so quickly.

Is it really best to stop levothyroxine for a couple of weeks first? Why? I went from levothyroxine one day to 1/2 grain the next & seem to have had no problem (I hadn't realised that it maybe wasn't the best way to do it).

I am up to 1 1/2 grains at night now as I have been increasing by 1/2 grain per week. Should I just continue to increase by 1/2 grain weekly until I feel I'm slightly over & then fine-tune with 1/4 grains? (I used to take 100mg levothyroxine).

Thanks
